RATINGS

95Wine Enthusiast

...aromas of blackberry, black currant and purple flowers...mouth-coating texture covers the palate, presenting flavors of charred beef braised in blackberry sauce.

94Jeb Dunnuck

Blackberries, pepper, new leather, and hints of leafy herbs...rich, full-bodied, opulent red that has some classic Syrah game and wildness, ripe, velvety tannins, and a great finish.

93The Wine Advocate

...loads of black fruit, black pepper, smoked meats and dried herbs on the nose...palate is plush, concentrated and forward, propped with sturdy, well-balanced acidity...finish is staining and opulent, framed with drying, firm tannins that beautifully frame the otherwise plushly fruited core.

92Vinous / IWC

...sweet herbs, red plums and hints of camphor. It's soft-textured and round with crisp wild berry fruits and sour citrus. This leaves a pleasantly chewy sensation and sweet tannins, finishing with admirable length and a note of licorice.

91James Suckling

Dense and composed with aromas of blackberries, dark plums, roasted meat and black pepper. Medium to full body with fine tannins. It’s creamy and well-rounded with rich, caressing and appealing dark cherries and berries and a vibrant touch of baking spice and pepper in the finish.

REGION

United States, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

Paso Robles AVA is midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, and it is considered one of the West Coast’s most exciting winemaking regions. With its hot, sometimes searingly dry and sunny weather, it is especially good country for growing warm climate grapes such as Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. Because many Paso Robles wineries have been successful with blending these grapes into Rhone Valley-style wines, it is known as the Rhone zone of California. The AVA was created in 1983 and there are 32,000 vineyard acres. In late 2014 the AVA was divided into 11 smaller sub-appellations, so starting with 2015 vintages labeling will become more specific on Paso Robles wines, which will now also list sub-appellations. Located in San Luis Obispo County, Paso Robles, the town and its surrounding area, was traditionally a farming and ranching region. But from a few dozen wineries in the early 1990s to more than 200 today, the area is quickly becoming known for wine and risk-taking winemakers.
