RATINGS

94Wine Enthusiast

Lively, clean and dark aromas of cassis and blueberry are cut by cassis on the ripe yet fresh nose of this bottling. The palate is unctuous with cassis and violet flavors that ride silky yet tense tannins into a lingering finish.

93+ The Wine Advocate

...savory scents of iodine, saddle leather, pipe tobacco and cast iron complementing a core of violet-laced blackcurrant fruit...full-bodied palate is focused on mineral character...has a frame of clay-textured tannins, energetic acidity and a long finish.

93-96Vinous / IWC

...darkly floral in character with crushed stone minerality and an array of black fruits and exotic spices...soft and round, with crisp blackberries and currants underscored by brisk acidity...finishes remarkably fresh with resonating crystalline tannins and inner violet florals. What a beauty.

93James Suckling

Notes of blackberries, cassis, dried herbs, earth and some leather, too. Medium body with firm tannins. It's dark and chewy on the palate with blackberries and bark dominating.

92+ Jeb Dunnuck

...notes of darker currants, cedary oak, sagebrush, and chocolaty spice all define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a round, nicely textured mouthfeel...

REGION

United States, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

Paso Robles AVA is midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, and it is considered one of the West Coast’s most exciting winemaking regions. With its hot, sometimes searingly dry and sunny weather, it is especially good country for growing warm climate grapes such as Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. Because many Paso Robles wineries have been successful with blending these grapes into Rhone Valley-style wines, it is known as the Rhone zone of California. The AVA was created in 1983 and there are 32,000 vineyard acres. In late 2014 the AVA was divided into 11 smaller sub-appellations, so starting with 2015 vintages labeling will become more specific on Paso Robles wines, which will now also list sub-appellations. Located in San Luis Obispo County, Paso Robles, the town and its surrounding area, was traditionally a farming and ranching region. But from a few dozen wineries in the early 1990s to more than 200 today, the area is quickly becoming known for wine and risk-taking winemakers.
