RATINGS

95Wine Spectator

Jammed with personality and torque, this retains a briary sense of balance, offering expressive red and dark berry flavors, accented by white pepper, eucalyptus and smoky anise notes. The tannins are big but well-groomed.

95Wine Enthusiast

Incredibly floral, bright and jammy, it evokes violet and berry pie, with rounded tannins that don't get in the way of the juicy midpalate. This wine is fresh with plenty of power.

94The Wine Advocate

...scented of Black Forest cake, crushed black plums and blackberry compote with hints of chocolate box, anise and tilled black soil with a touch of garrigue. The palate is full-bodied, concentrated and nicely balanced...with a firm, grainy frame and great freshness, finishing long and earthy.

94Vinous / IWC

Black cherry, smoke, new leather, licorice and incense add to an impression of muscular power....its beautifully textured and full of detail...

94+ Jeb Dunnuck

...more broad, opulent and powerful...lots of darker, plummy fruits, violets, lavender, and peppery meat aromatics. Big, rich, and layered on the palate, with full-bodied richness and sweet tannin...

REGION

United States, California, Sonoma, Russian River Valley

Russian River Valley AVA is named for the river that meanders from Mendocino County in the north until it finally runs into the Pacific Ocean north of San Francisco. The AVA is cool thanks to its proximity to the northern California coast and the river, and grape growers must learn to deal with regular fog. Nevertheless in recent decades the AVA has become one of the best in the state, meaning that its wines often earn excellent reviews and have considerable cachet. The AVA status was awarded in 1983 and today the appellation has 15,000 vineyard acres. Chardonnay is the most widely planted grape though Pinot Noir has also been very successful in recent decades. Russian River Valley Pinot Noir are known for being rich, lush and filled with concentrated fruit and berry flavors. Russian River Pinot Noirs are today considered some of the best domestic Pinot Noirs.
