RATINGS

92James Suckling

A ripe barbera that shows depth of fruit and power. Full body, dried berry, wet earth and hints of shaved chocolate. Very long and expressive palate.

91Vinous / IWC

Dark red cherries, spices, cloves, rose petals and mint all blossom in the glass...fruit is open and expressive...plenty of freshness and tension... Sweet floral notes round out the finish.

PRODUCER

Pelissero

Pelissero is in Treiso, Piedmont. It is now run by Giorgio Pelissero, the third generation of the family to own the estate. The 100-acre estate is best known for its Barbaresco Vanotu and Dolcetto d’Alba. Wine Advocate has frequently awarded Pelissero’s wines with scores in the mid-90s. Gambero Rosso, the Italian wine journal, notes that Giorgio Pelissero “runs the estate dynamically and with very clear ideas about the stylistic profile that he seeks to impress on all his wines: cleanliness, drinkability and an elegant palate.” Some 250,000 bottles are produced annually.

REGION

Italy, Piedmont, Barbera di Alba

Barbera d’Alba is a DOC centered around the town of Alba, and it is considered home to some of the best wines made from the Barbera grape. Barbera is the most frequently planted grape in Piedmont, thanks to its adaptability and vigorous character. It is easier to grow and less susceptible to adverse weather than Nebbiolo, which is grown in neighboring appellations. Barbera in general has relatively low tannins but high acidity, and the wines tend to have flavors of ripe currant and cherry. The Barbera DOC was created in 1970 and the DOC wines must be 100% Barbera.

TYPE

Red Wine, Barbera, D.O.C.

This red wine is from Piedmont. It is known for low tannins and high acidity, which makes it taste both light-bodied and rich. Barbera most often drinks early, but some variations can be cellared. The wine is relatively inexpensive and flexible for pairing.
