RATINGS

94-95The Wine Advocate

...clarion aromatic fanfare of citrus and herbs; a tactile, quarry-like depth and density of crushed stone on the palate; and a finish of prodigious length, scrupulous pristinity, and electric vivacity.

94Wine Spectator

An alluring white, with opulence and grace. Peach, apricot, lemon and mineral aromas and flavors permeate the lush texture, all supported by a vibrant structure. This is beautifully balanced and ends with a creamy, vanilla-laced finish.

94+ Stephen Tanzer

Captivating nose combines a saline oyster shell quality with menthol, wet stone and violet. Dense and sweet in the mouth, with superb intensity, cut and purity to the flavors of underripe pineapple, wet stone and white flowers.

93Burghound.com

A white flower, wet stone, green apple, herbal and toasty oak nose complements to perfection the full-bodied and tautly muscled flavors that possess serious size and weight while culminating in an exceptionally power, extract-filled finish.

REGION

France, Burgundy, Côte d'Or, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses, Corton-Charlemagne

Corton-Charlemagne is a historic appellation for Grand Cru Chardonnay in the Cote de Beaune of Burgundy. The 129-acre vineyard falls within the boundaries of three communes, Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses and Ladoix-Serrigny. According to Burgundian historians, the vineyard is named for Charlemagne, the 8th century ruler who conquered most of western Europe. Charlemagne enjoyed the red wine of Corton, but as he grew older his wife disliked the red wine stains in his white beard, so Charlemagne had white grapes planted in Corton. Today only Chardonnay is allowed to be planted in Corton-Charlemagne, and it is one of Burgundy's most celebrated appellations for Grand Cru white wine. The largest land owners are Louis Latour, with 24 acres; Bonneau du Martray, with 23 acres; and Bouchard Pere et Fils, 9.5 acres.
