RATINGS

96Vinous / IWC

...simply magnificent. Super-ripe red cherry, plum, cedar, tobacco, mocha and licorice are some of the many notes that just soar out of the glass.

95The Wine Advocate

The wine peels back to reveal layer after layer of dark fruit, oak spice, chocolate and sweet tobacco.

95James Suckling

This is a beauty with notes of dried meat, dried plums, vanilla and eucalyptus. Full-bodied and very structured on the palate, thanks to muscular tannins. But it’s the acidity that really drives this and keeps you coming back for more and more. A long yet polished finish.

94Wine Spectator

Black currant, black cherry, raspberry, iron and toasty vanilla aromas and flavors mark this elegant, firmly structured red. Balanced and long, with ripe fruit offsetting the dense tannins.

90Wine Enthusiast

...aromas of black-skinned berry, bell pepper and Mediterranean brush...dense palate delivers prune, cassis, licorice and tobacco alongside big, chewy tannins.

17Jancis Robinson

Modern, plush fruit with a syrupy character. This is Italy by way of South Australia! Super-fruity.

REGION

Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri

Bolgheri is a tiny village just inland from the western Tuscan coast with a storybook renaissance castle but no train station. To wine enthusiasts, however, Bolgheri DOC is perhaps Italy’s most exciting wine appellation. It is the cultural heart of the Maremma, the coastal stretch of Tuscany where some of the first Super Tuscans were produced commercially in the late 1960s. Various members of the legendary Antinori wine dynasty and other influential producers established estates in Bolgheri starting in the 1970s, creating such Super Tuscans as Guado Al Tasso and Ornellaia. Bolgheri was awarded DOC status in 1983. Red, white and dessert wines are made in this appellations, and many of the most renowned are the Super Tuscans made from blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese and other red varietals. The white wines are blends of Vermentino and Trebbiano. The reds are notable for being blends that have a distinctive Tuscan terroir.
