RATINGS

98Vinous / IWC

...captures all the natural radiance and voluptuousness... Powerful, bold and luscious...a headspinning beauty. Dark red/purplish berry fruit, licorice, mint and cedar open first. A firm backbone of tannin and acid lurks beneath all of that fruit richness...a wonderfully complete wine...

96James Suckling

The tannins are so nicely integrated and firm with wonderful length. Full-bodied and polished with stone and dark-fruit character. Flavorful finish. Nice balance and length.

95The Wine Advocate

...vibrant scents of crushed black cherries, fresh blackberries and blackcurrant jelly with suggestions of menthol, pencil lead, dark chocolate and violets. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is chock-full of energetic, crunchy black fruits, supported by ripe, grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing long and perfumed.

95Jeb Dunnuck

Wonderful crème de cassis, white flowers, unsmoked tobacco, spice, and hints of lead pencil all emerge from the glass. Full-bodied, with a layered, elegant texture and polished tannins...gorgeous...

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena

St. Helena AVA is at the northern end of Napa Valley just north of Rutherford and south of Calistoga. It is a relatively warm climate thanks to the Mayacamas Mountains on its western edge, which protect it from Pacific Ocean fog. Out of the 9,000 acres in the appellation, some 1,500 are under vine. The principal grapes grown in St. Helena are the Bordeaux grapes of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. St. Helena is considered prime wine producing territory, and it was one of the first important wine producing regions in northern California. The legendary Charles Krug founded his winery just north of the town of St. Helena in 1873, and today the appellation is home to many prestigious producers, including Abreu, Grace Family and Spottswoode.
