RATINGS

96The Wine Advocate

...features deep black cherries, moving toward cassis, with some distinct sage notes. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, there's great structure but also excellent ripeness and plenty of fruit, culminating in a long, velvety finish.

95Jeb Dunnuck

...incredibly complex profile displaying ample dark, almost black fruits, dried herbs, sage, and baking spices...medium to full-bodied, with ripe, polished tannins and outstanding length.

16.5+ Jancis Robinson

Luscious, velvety nose and then lots of fine tannin.

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena

St. Helena AVA is at the northern end of Napa Valley just north of Rutherford and south of Calistoga. It is a relatively warm climate thanks to the Mayacamas Mountains on its western edge, which protect it from Pacific Ocean fog. Out of the 9,000 acres in the appellation, some 1,500 are under vine. The principal grapes grown in St. Helena are the Bordeaux grapes of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. St. Helena is considered prime wine producing territory, and it was one of the first important wine producing regions in northern California. The legendary Charles Krug founded his winery just north of the town of St. Helena in 1873, and today the appellation is home to many prestigious producers, including Abreu, Grace Family and Spottswoode.

TYPE

Red Wine, Cabernet Sauvignon

One of the most widely grown grape varieties, it can be found in nearly every wine growing region. A cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a hardy vine that produces a full-bodied wine with high tannins and great aging potential.

...offering gorgeous red and black currants, plums, graphite, ripe tobacco, and gravelly earth-like minerality. It's rich, medium to full-bodied, has ripe tannins, and a gorgeous finish.

92+ The Wine Advocate

...features scents of pea pod, crushed stone and dried herbs softened just a bit by cassis and blueberry fruit. It's medium to full-bodied and firmly tannic, with a long, drying finish.

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, Coombsville

Coombsville AVA is one of Napa Valley’s newer appellations, having received its official designation only in 2011. Tucked just to the northeast of Los Carneros and a few minutes’ drive east of downtown Napa, the Coombsville appellation is relatively large at a total of 11,000 acres. The elevation varies from 100 to 1,000 feet, and the climate is moderated by marine breezes from the San Pablo Bay. The main grape varieties here are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Syrah and Pinot Noir.

RATINGS

94The Wine Advocate

...offers up cool scents of dried mint and similar herbs layered against a backdrop of black cherries and cassis. Medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated, with ripe, velvety tannins, this wine's lovely, pure flavors seem to linger for minutes on the finish.

17Jancis Robinson

There's a slightly vegy top note and a particularly rich mid palate. Really luscious wine that delivers without heaviness.

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, Oak Knoll

Oak Knoll AVA is one of Napa Valley’s newest appellations, having received that status in 2004. Located on the southern end of Napa Valley, the appellation is close to San Pablo Bay and therefore relatively cool. Of the 8,300 acres within the appellation, 4,150 are vineyards. The principal grapes grown are Merlot, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Riesling. Locals like to call Oak Knoll “the sweet spot” thanks to its location between the San Pablo Bay and its maritime climate and the much hotter climate of Napa Valley’s floor.
