RATINGS

95The Wine Advocate

...offers very attractive scents of white peach, apricot and lemon curd. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine bead of acidity.

92Wine Spectator

There's loads of sliced green apple and pineapple on the nose, with spices. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with toasted almond and botrytis spice character, followed by a cooked apple and citrus finish.

89-92Stephen Tanzer

Subdued but pure aromas of white peach and flowers. Juicy, fresh and nicely balanced; in a rather gentle style despite possessing lively acidity.

17Jancis Robinson

Floral nose. Good weight and an edge of lime. Manages to be racy as well as heavyweight. Still quite chewy.

PRODUCER

Château Rayne-Vigneau

Château Rayne Vigneau is a Premier Grand Cru Classe Sauternes estate. Its 207 acres is planted to 74% Semillon, 24% Sauvignon and 2% Muscadelle. In the 19th century it was nearly as famous as Château d’Yquem and it enjoys a terrific site on a high plateau of gravel and sand soil. The second wind is Madame de Rayne.

REGION

France, Bordeaux, Sauternes, Bommes

Sauternes makes the world’s most famous dessert wines. Though the appellation lies within the Graves region of Bordeaux’s left bank, the appellation makes only sweet wines from white grapes, primarily Semillon sometimes blended with small amounts of Muscadelle. The five communes within Sauternes are Barsac, Bommes, Fargues, Preignac and Sauternes. Barsac also has its own appellation and, typically, Barsac wines are slightly drier and lighter than other Sauternes. Sauternes are made when weather conditions result in a mold called Botrytis cinerea developing on the grapes, which causes them to become especially sweet. Sauternes are not produced every vintage, so successful vintages become especially collectible. Sauternes estates were classified in 1855, and Château d’Yquem, the appellation’s most prestigious estate, was ranked in a class by itself as a Premier Grand Cru. Château d’Yquem wines are among the most prized wines in the world.
