RATINGS

93Wine Spectator

Extremely fresh and racy, this red exhibits black cherry, raspberry, violet and mineral notes, backed by a steely structure that tightens up on the long finish. 70 cases imported.

92+ The Wine Advocate

Violets, licorice, red cherries and smoke are some of the notes that emerge from this clean, mineral-infused Clos Vougeot. I especially like the cool, vibrant finish. This is a very beautifully, pointed wine from Jadot.

...black fruit, spice and subtle animale hints that carry over to the powerful, mouth coating and very serious broad-shouldered flavors brimming with dry extract and plenty of muscle on the mouth coating and palate staining finish.

90-92Stephen Tanzer

...Aromas of black cherry and licorice. Chewy and dense but medicinal and closed. Totally different in texture from all the samples that preceded it. Finishes with a strong chocolatey flavor and powerful tannins...

PRODUCER

Louis Jadot

Maison Louis Jadot is one of Burgundy’s most respected negociants. Founded in 1859 by the Jadot family, the prestige and quality of the estate’s wines were well established in the 19th century. The family continued buying highly desirable vineyards in the 20th century. In 1985 the estate was sold to Rudy Kopf, Jadot’s American importer. Located in Beaune, the estate has 336 acres of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Gamay. Though all the maison’s wines are known for their high quality, signature wines are the Bonnes Mares, Chambertin-Close de Beze, Chevalier-Montrachet les Demoiselles, Corton-Charlemagne, Le Montrachet and Musigny. Pierre-Henry Gagey is president.

REGION

France, Burgundy, Côte d'Or, Côte de Nuits, Vougeot, Clos de Vougeot

Clos de Vougeot is a walled vineyard that dominates the tiny commune of Vougeot in Burgundy’s Nuits-St.-Georges. The 124-acre Grand Cru vineyard includes a historic chateau that in 1945 was purchased by the Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, an organization devoted to promoting the traditions of Burgundy and its wines. The impressive chateau is the organization’s headquarters. Clos de Vougeot was established as a vineyard by Cistercian monks in the 12th century, then sold off to private owners after the French Revolution. The vineyard is unusual for a Grand Cru in that it includes land that runs down to the main road. The soil is light limestone with sand. Principal landowners are Chateau de la Tour, with 13 acres; Meo-Camuzet, 7.5 acres; Rebourseau, 5.5 acres; Louis Jadot, 5.3 acres; and Leroy, 5 acres.

TYPE

Red Wine, Pinot Noir, Grand Cru

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
