La Paulée: A Wine Luncheon Like No Other
La Paulee: A Wine Auction and Luncheon Like No Other Posted: 05/23/2019

WineBid has participated in Hospices de Beaune, the world’s oldest wine auction, for the last 17 years. Hospices is the central event of the “Les Trois Glorieuses,” the three-day celebration of Burgundy’s harvest at the end of November. Hospices takes place on Sunday, and is bookended by two equally extraordinary wine events. On Saturday night, there is a banquet at the Château du Clos Vougeot. And Monday brings the celebratory luncheon, La Paulée.

La Paulée began modestly in 1923 when Jules Lafon invited 35 of his wine friends to share a feast in his vat room at Domain Lafon. In fact, even the name is modest, as “La Paulée” comes from “poile,” which is a single sauté pan used to make a simple meal. That first meal became wildly popular, and was an annual event by 1932. Today, 700 people attend the event at the Château de Meursault and enjoy an all-day feast. While La Paulée celebrates the region’s famed wine, it also pays homage to renowned writers and scientists.

Some of the most coveted bottles of Burgundy are poured with lunch and a local chorus always entertains the crowd with a rousing rendition of “Ban Bourguignon.” Since 2000, this winning model has been recreated in London, New York, Aspen and San Francisco. Once described by the Financial Times as the “greatest Bacchanalia on the face of the earth,” it’s the must-attend event of the year for Burgundy fans and wine lovers everywhere.

It’s too late to attend La Paulée in Meursault this November 19th, but the stateside events are scheduled for the spring. Of course, you can enjoy the fruits of Burgundy wine all year long. Try our Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from Albert BichotAlbert Ponnelle, and J.M. Perraud. We also offer beautiful wines from Decelle-Villa and Labruyere
