Spoto Wines

Spoto Family Wines has a legacy that dates from 1913, when Stuart Spoto’s grandfather immigrated to California from Sicily. The Spotos started a fruit and nut nursery and made wine for themselves from grapes they grew in the garden. Over the years the family often sought advice from experts at the UC Davis Viticulture and Enology Department and continued to make wine, which impressed friends and sommeliers. By 2004 the Spotos had decided to produce wine commercially, and today most family members are involved with the enterprise. Stuart Spoto is winemaker, and his wife and two daughters also help run the estate. Spoto Family Wines produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux-style blends, and some white wines on a limited production basis. The wines are generally available only through the winery or at a few restaurants and shops in Northern California. Wine Advocate has awarded Spoto wines ratings in the mid-90s and described a recent vintage as “full-bodied, rich, concentrated and (with a) complex palate…”
