La Carraia

La Carraia, in Orvieto, was founded in 1988 by Odoardo Gialletti and winemaker Riccardo Cotarella. The 300-acre estate is about half planted to Grechetto and Trebbiano, the grapes that go into Orvieto Classico. The estate also grows Merlot, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Montepulciano. In 1995 the estate also started producing Fobiano, a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. La Carraia produces about 550,000 bottles annually. The Italian wine review Gambero Rosso has written that La Carraia is “one of Umbria’s most innovative wineries in terms of style and quality.”
