Gould Campbell was founded in 1797 by Garret Gould who left his native Ireland for Portugal to avoid political instability in Ireland. In Portugal he went into business with the James Campbell Company of merchants and bankers. Gould Campbell became a leader producer and exporter of Port and in 1970 it was acquired by the Symington family, which owns a large portfolio of Port producers. Gould Campbell vineyards are in Alto Douro.
