RATINGS

93Vinous / IWC

Exotically perfumed & decadently rich nose redolent of ripe plum, sweet espresso, chocolate-covered blueberry, moss & allspice. Mouthcoatingly sweet & rich, this offers huge volume & extract, with a fleshy mouth feel to the ripe blackberry, prune, milk chocolate and sandalwood flavors...creamy-smooth finish...

90The Wine Advocate

...full-bodied, sweet and Amarone-like in its expression of sumptuous dark fruit, smoke, earthiness, black cherries, blackberries and spices.

PRODUCER

Oasi Degli Angeli

Oasi degli Angeli is in Cupra Marittima, in Marche. It was founded by Eleonara Rossi and Marco Casolanetti, who still own and operate the 40-acre estate. The estate’s flagship wine is Kurni, which is made from the Montepulciano grape. Though Kurni is not made within the Montepulciano appellation, which is in Tuscany, the Montepulciano grape is grown in many part of Italy, including in the Marche. Marco Casolanetti, owner and winemaker, is known for creating extremely concentrated wine. Kurni usually earns 3 glasses, the highest possible rating, from Gambero Rosso, Italy’s leading wine review. About 5,000 bottles of Kurni are produced annually.

REGION

Italy, Marche

Marche, or Le Marche as it is called in Italy, is on the Adriatic coast above Abruzzo and below Emilia-Romagna. A tiny northwest corner of Le Marche shares a border with Tuscany. As a wine producer, Le Marche is best known for its white wine made from the Verdicchio grape, which is thought to be native to the area. Plant scientists think Verdicchio is related to Trebbiano and Greco, and Verdicchio wine is noted for its almond and green fruit scent, and its very high acidity. Red wines are also produced, though in smaller quantities. The most distinctive red grape is Lacrima, which is often compared to Beaujolais because of its fruity quality. Montepulciano and Sangiovese are also grown, along with other reds. There are twelve DOCs, including Verdicchio dei Castelli Jesi and Verdicchio di Matelica, which are the best known and most complimented Verdicchio DOCs. The Rosso Cònero DOC is arguably the most-admired DOC for reds. With 61,000 acres of vineyards, Le March is Italy’s twelfth largest wine appellation by size.
