RATINGS

96The Wine Advocate

...fresh herbs and red fruits intermingled throughout its intricate aromatics. It is an extraordinary 1993, with the expected firm, highly present tannins, but an unexpectedly massive dose of dense, deep black fruit.

96Burghound.com

This is dripping with velvet as the concentrated sap that seemingly suffuses every aspect of the wine. While I appreciate that it sounds contradictory, this is discreetly opulent and yet never loses its remarkable sense of balance and finesse.

95Wine Spectator

Not as dense and complex as the '90 Richebourg, but perhaps better balanced. Seductively exotic, with complex interplay of violet, dried herb, floral and cassis notes. Loads of sweet, ripe, pure fruit balancing the fine tannins.

PRODUCER

Domaine Leroy

There are oenophiles who believe that Domaine Leroy produces the greatest wines in the world. The estate was founded in Burgundy in 1868 and today is owned and run by Lalou Bize-Leroy, a dynamo of a woman who represents the current generation of the founding family. Bize-Leroy is famous, among other reasons, for being an early adopter of biodynamic vineyard cultivation, meaning that there have been no chemicals, fertilizers or pesticides of any kind used in the Domaine Leroy production for many decades. The domaine, located in Vosne-Romanee, makes numerous wines, but is renowned for its Grand Crus and Premier Crus. Its Grand Crus are Corton-Charlemagne, Corton-Renardes, Richebourg, Romanee-St.-Vivant, Clos de Vougeot, Musigny, Clos de la Roche, Latricieres-Chambertin and Chambertin. The domaine has a total vineyard area of 56 acres which is planted in Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Aligote. Production is extremely limited, usually between 10,000 to 20,000 bottles.

REGION

France, Burgundy, Côte d'Or, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanee, Richebourg

Richebourg is an 18.3-acre Grand Cru pinot noir vineyard in the Cote de Nuits, within the commune of Vosne-Romanee. The vineyard lies just to the north of La Romanee and Romanee-Conti and is situated at elevations from 260 to 280 meters. The soil is a clay, pebble, limestone and sand mixture. Richebourg includes the subsection of Les Veroilles-sous-Richebourg. Principal landholders of Richebourg are Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, with 8.78 acres; Leroy, with 1.95 acres; and Gros Frere et Soeur, with 1.73 acres.

TYPE

Red Wine, Pinot Noir, Grand Cru

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
