RATINGS

97James Suckling

Blackcurrants, violets, pine needles, bark, and dark chocolate. Medium- to full-bodied with refined and polished tannins and a long and beautiful finish. The finish is fantastic with a crunchy character and hints of dark chocolate.

95Wine Enthusiast

The nose is all pepper and savory spices at first, before black cherries, currants and a bit of dark chocolate pop through. The berries and chocolate take over on the palate, but the wine is anchored by a savory salinity and more peppery heat.

94The Wine Advocate

...dark fruit, spicy bay leaf, exotic curry leaf, rose, tea and barbecued spice. The wine is actually quite rich, broad and textured in terms of mouthfeel. No part of the palate is untouched, as it is swept over with sweet tannins and very generous fruit.

94Wine Spectator

...black currant, cherry, licorice, iron and eucalyptus aromas and flavors. Fluid and more on the side of elegance than power yet shows good grip on the finish, with fine balance and length.

94Vinous / IWC

...copious dark-toned fruit along with complicating notes of dried herbs, menthol, licorice, mocha, lavender and espresso.

94Jeb Dunnuck

...oak-spiced aromas of toasted vanilla bean, cedar, cassis, sage, and black licorice. Full-bodied, it’s surprisingly light on its feet, with evenly balanced acidity, a supple texture, and ripe tannins.

REGION

Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri

Bolgheri is a tiny village just inland from the western Tuscan coast with a storybook renaissance castle but no train station. To wine enthusiasts, however, Bolgheri DOC is perhaps Italy’s most exciting wine appellation. It is the cultural heart of the Maremma, the coastal stretch of Tuscany where some of the first Super Tuscans were produced commercially in the late 1960s. Various members of the legendary Antinori wine dynasty and other influential producers established estates in Bolgheri starting in the 1970s, creating such Super Tuscans as Guado Al Tasso and Ornellaia. Bolgheri was awarded DOC status in 1983. Red, white and dessert wines are made in this appellations, and many of the most renowned are the Super Tuscans made from blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese and other red varietals. The white wines are blends of Vermentino and Trebbiano. The reds are notable for being blends that have a distinctive Tuscan terroir.
