RATINGS

98James Suckling

Wow. This is super linear and fine pinot, yet there is a unique, spicy character that shows fantastic clove, dried-herb and dark-strawberry flavors. It’s extremely energetic and racy. Great length and finish.

96+ Jeb Dunnuck

Spiced red and black raspberries, mulberries, spring flowers, crushed stone, and white pepper notes...deep, rich, structured wine with plenty of tannins, beautiful balance, and a great finish.

94Vinous / IWC

...potent, savory wine that captures all the savory intensity of this site. Dried herbs, menthol, sage, tobacco, dried flowers and leather lend notable aromatic complexity.

94Wine Enthusiast

Bold and dark aromas of cassis, boysenberry, violet and chai-laced coffee cake...palate's texture manages to be both soft and sticky, silky enough to carry the flavors of bake fruit and baking spice, but rigid enough to carry deep into the peppered finish.

91The Wine Advocate

...has aromas of red and black cherries, charcuterie, tobacco, allspice and graphite with autumnal undertones...palate is concentrated, ripe and gregariously spicy...has a finely chalky, energetic structure and an easygoing finish.

91Wine Spectator

Plump and fruit-filled, with a juicy dark cherry and boysenberry core that holds center stage, while light black tea and singed apple wood notes check in on the finish.

REGION

United States, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County, Santa Rita Hills

Santa Rita Hills AVA in northern Santa Barbara County was granted appellation status in 2001. Located between the towns of Lompoc and Buellton, it has a total area of 30,720 acres with 2,700 vineyard acres. The area is considered a cool climate for vineyards, so vineyards are most often planted with the cool-weather grapes Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The hills in the western part of this appellation are directly exposed to the Pacific Ocean, meaning that maritime winds and fog make the western edge of the Santa Rita Hills AVA particularly cool. The Sanford & Benedict Vineyard planted in 1971 was the first vineyard in the district and is still considered one of the best.

TYPE

Red Wine, Pinot Noir

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
