RATINGS

98Jeb Dunnuck

An incredible nose of blue fruits (cassis, blueberries, mulberries) as well as chocolate, camphor, leafy herbs, and flowers gives way to a full-bodied, pure, seamless wine with ultra-fine tannins, no hard edges, and a brilliant finish.

97Vinous / IWC

Crème de cassis, lavender, rose petal, spice, sweet new oak and incense all build effortlessly in the glass. The aromatics alone are totally beguiling.

95The Wine Advocate

...leaps with vibrant wild blueberries, warm cassis and boysenberries scents, plus touches of garrigue, crushed rocks and fragrant earth...full-on, full-bodied palate offers generous black fruits and an earthy undercurrent, framed by soft, approachable tannins, finishing with fantastic length.

91Wine Spectator

Juicy, frankly ripe and nicely stuffed, with plum, blackberry and açaí berry flavors backed by warm cocoa, ganache and singed alder. A bit amped up, but will have its fans.

PRODUCER

Cade

Cade, on Howell Mountain in Napa Valley, was founded in 2005 by a trio of Bay Area wine entrepreneurs. The principals are Gavin Newsom, former San Francisco Mayor; Gordon Getty, investor; and John Conover, a long-time wine industry executive. The three men were also the team behind PlumpJack Wines and they have interests in restaurants and resorts in Northern California. The 54-acre Cade estate is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The estate produces Cabernet Sauvignon, a Bordeaux style wine and Sauvignon Blanc.

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

Howell Mountain AVA in Northeastern Napa Valley was the first of Napa Valley’s sub-appellations, earning its own designation in 1984, just a year after Napa Valley became an appellation. As the name suggests, the AVA is in one of the highest elevations in the area. Every vineyard in the appellation is at least 1,400 feet above sea level. Some vineyards are as high as 2,200 feet and because of their altitude most of the AVA’s vineyards receive more sun than vineyards at lower elevations, which are affected by fog from the Pacific Ocean and the San Pablo Bay. Howell Mountain was home to vineyards in the late 19th century, but winemaker Randy Dunn is considered the area’s most influential modern pioneer. Dunn moved to Howell Mountain in 1979, acquired property and began making exceptionally rich Cabernet Sauvignon. The AVA also grows Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. There are 600 vineyard acres within Howell Mountain AVA.

TYPE

Red Wine, Cabernet Sauvignon

One of the most widely grown grape varieties, it can be found in nearly every wine growing region. A cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a hardy vine that produces a full-bodied wine with high tannins and great aging potential.
