RATINGS

95Jeb Dunnuck

...open with aromas of pencil shaving, toasted pine, licorice candy, lavender, and blackcurrant. Fleshy and full-bodied, it retains good freshness and offers a velvety texture and a good bit of length.

94The Wine Advocate

...hint of savory greenness with peppercorn, bay leaf, baked plum and blackberry preserves. The oak adds sweetness with cinnamon and nutmeg over a very generous mouthfeel with thick, chalky tannins...intense on the palate compared to the bouquet.

94Wine Spectator

...leads off with ample iron and savory aromas and flavors, courtesy of eucalyptus, wild rosemary and mineral notes, all framing the core of pure black currant and blackberry fruit...fine length.

94Wine Enthusiast

The nose is a sun-soaked seafaring adventure, with savory notes of dried meat...leather belts and boots mixing with a rich fruitiness and the salty sea air. The rich, fruity, chocolaty palate eventually turns spicy, and that spice dances with searing acidity to prolong the finish.

93James Suckling

Notes of toasted spices, dark cedar, cocoa and bark with a mix of red and blue fruit in the background. Full, compact and lightly chewy with firm, vertical tannins. Spiced, ripe and intense, yet well-integrated and balanced with tension and persistence.

93Decanter Magazine (points)

...intense nose of cassis with floral hints and black olives is enhanced by balsamic depth... The tannins seems to be grainy, extracted, still to condense but ripe, with crisp balancing acidity. The sweetness of the fruit, a bit confected, is balanced by a kind of bitter finish.

REGION

Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri

Bolgheri is a tiny village just inland from the western Tuscan coast with a storybook renaissance castle but no train station. To wine enthusiasts, however, Bolgheri DOC is perhaps Italy’s most exciting wine appellation. It is the cultural heart of the Maremma, the coastal stretch of Tuscany where some of the first Super Tuscans were produced commercially in the late 1960s. Various members of the legendary Antinori wine dynasty and other influential producers established estates in Bolgheri starting in the 1970s, creating such Super Tuscans as Guado Al Tasso and Ornellaia. Bolgheri was awarded DOC status in 1983. Red, white and dessert wines are made in this appellations, and many of the most renowned are the Super Tuscans made from blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese and other red varietals. The white wines are blends of Vermentino and Trebbiano. The reds are notable for being blends that have a distinctive Tuscan terroir.
