RATINGS

95Wine Enthusiast

It's rich and round, wearing its brambly, medicinal, earthy, spicy and floral colors loud and proud. The silky mouthfeel is tugged into place by sappy tannins. There's intensity, balance and structure, and a real sense of place.

93Vinous / IWC

It fills the mouth with a silken core of dense blue and red fruit. Savory tannin provides a corset that hugs the fleshy middle, while a thread of acidity and (30%) whole-bunch-derived line and spice keep this wine going from start to finish.

93James Suckling

Plenty of spice and modern-leaning, reductive complexity here, as well as bright red cherries, blueberries, cassis and violets. The palate has a fleshy, supple and attractively fresh red-cherry and blueberry core. Mouth-filling, flavorful and vividly fresh at the finish.

16Jancis Robinson

Very pale, shaded garnet. Slightly vegy nose that’s appealingly lifted. Sweet palate entry but some delicacy.

PRODUCER

Craggy Range

Craggy Range is located in Havelock North, New Zealand. It was founded in the late 1990s by businessman Terry Peabody, who had an international career in waste management and transportation before starting Craggy Range. The estate makes a large portfolio of wines from Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Chardonnay, to Syrah, Pinot Noir and Bordeaux-style blends.

REGION

New Zealand, Wairarapa, Martinborough

Wairarapa is on the south end of New Zealand’s north island, and it is the country’s most exciting Pinot Noir region. Martinborough is the very small town that serves as the South Wairarapa region’s commercial center, and the district is home to more than 60 wineries, many of them specializing in Pinot Noir, and, more recently Pinot Gris. A mountain range between Wellington, to the west, and Wairarapa keeps the region’s vineyards temperate, with relatively dry falls that are optimal for Pinot Noir harvesting. The region also has the greatest variation between average daytime and average night temperatures, also a boon to grape growing and especially Pinot Noir. Sauvignon Blanc is also grown. ?

TYPE

Red Wine, Pinot Noir

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
