RATINGS

95Vinous / IWC

...beautifully defined bouquet that soars from the glass with blackberry, raspberry coulis, hints of iodine and crushed iris flower aromas. The new oak (60%) is seamlessly integrated here. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins and perfectly judged acidity, silky yet with sufficient tension and sapidity on the edgy finish to beckon you back for another sip.

95James Suckling

Black berry, black cherry and sandalwood aromas and flavors. Medium to full body, with chewy tannins that are polished and fresh. Linear and racy at the end...crisp and solid...

94Decanter Magazine (points)

Beautifully perfumed on the nose, smells sweet and delicate. Smooth and ample in the mouth, succulent and juicy, quite lean, a sense of austerity in the cool, mineral edged fruit - blackcurrant and blueberry with cola edges and wet stone touches too...beautifully delicate and poised...elegant and polished...

94Jeb Dunnuck

...beautiful cassis and red currant-like fruit that gives way to notes of tobacco, cedar pencil, and hints of flowers. It's medium-bodied, has a supple, layered mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and a great finish...gorgeous...

93+ The Wine Advocate

...offering up aromas of dark berries and plums mingled with subtle notions of baking chocolate, mint, pencil lead and vanilla pod. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and suave, with a seamless core of fruit that's framed by polished tannins and bright but nicely integrated acids, it concludes with a long, delicately mordant finish.

92Wine Spectator

...mix of violet, black cherry and red currant fruit flavors. The finish reveals almost no grain as a subtle black tea note weaves through, also delivering a light iron underpinning. A solid effort -- kudos.

17.5Jancis Robinson

Perfumed in a nice Margaux way. Polished and assured. Clean and both sweet and a little saline... Beautifully balanced. Long.

PRODUCER

Château Rauzan-Segla

Château Rauzan-Ségla is 130-acre estate in the Margaux appellation. It is a Second Growth estate, but it is often called a “super second,” a flattering term meaning that the wines of the château can be as remarkable as First Growths. In the 17th century Rauzan-Ségla was part of a large estate owned by Pierre de Mesures de Rauzan, a Bordeaux wine trader. The estate was eventually divided into four separate estates. After several changes of ownership – and a confusing and temporary name change to Rausan-Ségla – the estate was in 1994 sold to the Wertheimer family, which owns Chanel, the fashion and perfume conglomerate. The Wertheimers added property to the estate, which now includes 150 acres. Major improvements were made and the name was changed back to Rauzan-Ségla. To celebrate its 350th anniversary in 2011, the estate bottled its 2009 vintage with a label drawn by fashion legend Karl Lagerfeld. Winemaker and managing director is John Kolasa. The vineyards are planted to 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 2% each Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Some 8,000 cases are produced annually. The estate's second wine is Ségla.

REGION

France, Bordeaux, Margaux

Margaux is one of Bordeaux’s most famous appellations and also one of its largest, with about 3,400 acres of vineyards. Located on the Left Bank of the Gironde River, Margaux has the greatest number of classified-growth châteaux (or crus classé) according to the 1855 classification. There are twenty-one crus classé, including the most famous estate, the first growth Château Margaux. The Margaux appellation includes vineyards around the village of Margaux and the villages of Arsac, Cantenac, d’Issan, Labarde and Soussans. Wines from the best Margaux châteaux and vintages are prized for their perfumey fragrance and elegant, silky mouthfeel. Margaux wines are predominately Cabernet Sauvignon blended with Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
