RATINGS

98The Wine Advocate

...reaches a whole other level of intensity and brilliance with dark fruit, blackberry, an etched mineral quality, petrichor and wet slate that gives this wine an incredibly etched and lively presentation. The tannins are velvety and perfectly match the generous texture of this beautiful Sangiovese...delicate tones of purple flower and iris root that give this wine such an elegant finish.

96+ Vinous / IWC

...burst of mentholated herbs that give way to sweet violet florals, crushed blackberries and mint. This is deeply textural, nearly creamy in feel, with a core of vibrant acidity to balance as a wave of ripe red and traces of blue fruit flood the palate. Its minerality comes through the finish, mingling with edgy tannins, tart cranberry and orange, yet the mouth is left watering for more.

96Decanter Magazine (points)

Delineated aromas of eucalyptus, tobacco, dark melted chocolate and brambly berries deliver a seductive overture. The palate follows through with lovely fruit clarity, bringing in pressed florals and a mineral-like, energetic sensation of crystallised rocks. Amply weighted and gracious, its layers of polished tannins and generous concentration...

94Wine Spectator

...precise style, exhibiting cherry, blackberry, violet, wild herb and stony mineral flavors. Underlined with a firm, harmonious structure that gives excellent overall balance...long, with a strong echo of fruit on the aftertaste.

94James Suckling

Black cherries, plums and floral notes with subtle, underlying citrus character. Full-bodied and structured. Chewy yet fine-grained tannins. Healthy and vibrant. Persistent length and depth.

94Jeb Dunnuck

...generous with a floral and ripe perfume of blackberry preserve, tarry earth, violets, and eucalyptus. Approachable and juicy up front...full-bodied Brunello reveals plush tannins and a ripe mid-palate as well as good length on the finish.

17+ Jancis Robinson

Very backward and closed on the nose, and with rich cherry fruit on the palate. Very long, compelling and structured...

REGION

Italy, Tuscany, Brunello di Montalcino

Brunello di Montalcino is regarded as one of Italy’s best appellations. Located in south central Tuscany below Chianti, the wines of Brunello di Montalcino DOCG are made of a Sangiovese clone called “brunello,” which means “little dark one,” a reference to the brown tones in the skin of the grape. Unlike some Tuscan appellations that allow other grapes to be blended with Sangiovese, Brunello di Montalcino is entirely Sangiovese. Montalcino itself is a picturesque, hill-top town not especially well known for wine production until the mid-19th century, when a local vineyard owner isolated the brunello clone and planted it. Other growers followed suit. Nevertheless it wasn’t until 1970s that wine enthusiasts started paying attention to Brunello di Montalcino, which by then was becoming an outstanding wine. Today there are 120 estates in the DOCG, up from about 25 estates in 1975. Brunellos in general are bigger, darker, more tannic and more powerful wines than Chiantis or most other Sangioveses. By law they must be aged for four years, and two of those years must be in wooden barrels.
