RATINGS

98The Wine Advocate

...deep, refined and complex on the generous but precise and refined nose that is beautifully flinty but also generous in its fruit expression... On the palate, this is a very elegant, refined and persistently salty Honivogl with enormous richness combined with finesse and crystallinity. A gorgeously elegant and refined Veltliner with great terroir expression. Adorable.

98James Suckling

So deep, yet so bright. So concentrated, yet so light on its feet, thanks to the miraculous balance between power and enough freshness to animate all the exotic-fruit and spicy character (think fresh mango chutney). Enormous depth at the finish.

PRODUCER

Franz Hirtzberger

Weingut Franz Hirtzberger is in Austria’s Wachau valley. It was founded five generations ago by the Hirtzberger family and is today still run by a descendant of the founder also named Franz Hirtzberger. The estate makes Riesling, Veltliner, Pinot Blanc and other white wines. Robert M. Parker Jr. notes that the estate’s wines “possess cult status.”

TYPE

White Wine, Grüner Veltliner, Smaragd

This white grape is widely grown in Austria, Czech Republic and Slovakia. As a wine, it is food friendly and has beaten top Chardonnays in blind tastings. It compares to a white Burgundy in richness and texture, and offers an exotic alternative to Sauvignon Blanc.
