89-91Vinous / IWC

...offers vivacious red cherry and strawberry on the transparent nose...fresh, lively palate is well balanced with candied red fruit on the entry and a fine bead of acidity...pixelated finish...

88-90The Wine Advocate

...aromas of peony, rose petal, citrus rind, warm spices, grilled meats and espresso roast, with some berry fruit in a supporting role. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and ample, with supple structuring tannins that are largely concealed by a succulent core of fruit.

17Jancis Robinson

Intensely sweet red-cherry fruit and lots of spice but seems like fruit not oak spice. Fragrant and jumping out of the glass. Cherry pie. A little bit toasty on the palate but it is the pure fruit that sings. The spice is slight, the oak swallowed. More savoury and spiced on the palate with a sour-cherry finish.

PRODUCER

Comte Liger-Belair

Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair is a 23-acre estate in Vosne-Romanee. It was created in 2000 by Louis-Michel Liger-Belair from vineyards that have been in the Liger-Belair family, in one way or another, since the early 19th century. The original Louis Liger-Belair was a general in Napoleon’s army who purchased the chateau in 1815 and in the early 20th century wines were made under the name of Comte Liger-Belair. However in the middle of the 20th century parts of the estate were lost or sold for various reasons. Today Louis-Michel has re-established the Comte Liger-Belair label and he has vineyards in 12 appellations. There are Grand Cru parcels in La Romanee and Echezeaux, and Premier Crus in Vosne-Romanee and Nuits-Saint-Georges. Clive Coates has written that “from the start, Louis-Michel has shown himself to be a sensible and astute winemaker: a man of real talent. These are elegant, finely tuned and very pure wines.”

REGION

France, Burgundy, Côte d'Or, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanee

Vosne-Romanée is the most prestigious appellation in Burgundy. Its 449 acres of vineyards are in and around the village of Vosne-Romanée and they include renowned Grand Cru vineyards which produce some of the world’s most coveted – and costly —wines. The Grands Crus are Richebourg, La Romanée, Romanée-Conti, Romanée-Saint-Vivant and La Tâche. The Grand Crus Échezeaux and Grands- Échezeaux are actually located in the neighboring village of Flagey-Échezeaux, but legally they can be sold under the Vosne-Romanée appellation. There are also seventeen Premier Crus in Vosne-Romanée. Wine writer Clive Coates has called Vosne-Romanée “the greatest Pinot Noir village on earth” and notes that the appellation’s style “is for wines which are rich, austere, sensual, masculine and aristocratic.”

TYPE

Red Wine, Pinot Noir

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
