RATINGS

93Wine Spectator

A firmly structured, tensile version, boasting a core of cherry and raspberry flavors, with leafy, vegetal accents. Shows a fine balance overall, with saturated flavors and a lingering aftertaste.

93-95Vinous / IWC

Rose petal, cinnamon, dried herbs and red cherries caress the palate. The 2012 is soft, silky and gracious throughout.

90-92The Wine Advocate

...hints of dried violets informing the lively dark cherry fruit. The palate is silky smooth with a fine thread of acidity. It is well balanced, nicely focused with a tense sorbet-fresh finish with hints of cassis and orange rind.

PRODUCER

Domaine Perrot-Minot

Domaine Henri Perrot-Minot is a 32-acre estate in Morey-Saint-Denis, in Burgundy’s Cote de Nuits. The domaine was founded in the 19th century, and is today still owned and operated by descendants of the founders. Henri Perrot-Minot married into the family in 1963 and ran the estate until 1993, when his son Christophe took over. Christophe has expanded the estate into Vosne-Romanee and Perrot-Minot now has Grand Cru parcels in Chambertin-Clos de Beze, Chambertin, Mazoyeres-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, Chapelle-Chambertin and Clos Vougeot. The estate also has 14 Premier Cru parcels. Clive Coates has written that “this is a very good address.”

REGION

France, Burgundy, Côte d'Or, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey Chambertin, Griotte-Chambertin

Griotte-Chambertin, sometimes spelled Griottes-Chambertin, is in Robert M. Parker Jr.’s words “a miniscule jewel of a vineyard” at just 6.7 acres. It is located across the road from Clos de Beze and produces only 800 cases of wine a year. The soil is extremely thin but the vineyard has excellent drainage, and wine writers all seem to agree that wines from Griotte-Chambertin are outstanding. Clive Coates writes that “Griotte has a poise and individuality that raises it above all but the very best Charmes.” Principal landholders are Ponsot/Domaine des Chezeaux, 2.23 acres; Rene Leclerc/Domaine des Chezeaux, 1.88 acres; and Joseph Drouhin, 1.33 acres.

TYPE

Red Wine, Pinot Noir, Grand Cru

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
