RATINGS

97+ The Wine Advocate

...flamboyant notes of wild blueberries, boysenberries and warm cassis, plus wafts of violets, dusty soil and clove oil. Full-bodied and packed with impactful black and blue fruits, the opulent flavors are skillfully supported by plush tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with epic length.

97Jeb Dunnuck

...mix of opulence and elegance in its full-bodied aromas and flavors of cassis, flowery incense, candied violets, spice, and tobacco...seamless as they come, balanced, with ripe, polished tannins...

96James Suckling

A chewy and polished red with blackberry and blueberry character. Terra-cotta undertones. Fresh oyster mushrooms as well. Full-bodied, juicy and layered. Very Oakville with nice tannin framing.

94Vinous / IWC

...another huge, potent wine in this range, but it appears to have enough fruit to stand up to its formidable tannins. Inky dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate, spice, menthol and licorice give this brooding beauty all of the To Kalon signatures.

94Wine Enthusiast

...plenty of power and intrigue. Iron, crushed rock and tight, grippy tannins underscore a prominence of oak, clove and tobacco. Dark-cherry fruit is lifted by underlying acidity and a softening touch of dried herb on the finish.

92Wine Spectator

This is lush in feel, with waves of plum compote, warmed cassis and melted red and black licorice flavors layered seamlessly, while light singed vanilla and mocha hints guide the finish.

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, Oakville, To Kalon Vineyard

To- Kalon is one of the most famous vineyards in Napa Valley, often called the first “grand cru” California vineyard. It has always inspired those who live near it. Native Americans called the area around it tu-la-halusi – meaning “beautiful land.” And later residents called it To-Kalon, Greek for “the most beautiful.” Originally planted by Hamilton Crabb in 1968, it today is owned by Andy Beckstoffer, the Robert Mondavi Winery and Opus One. Beckstoffer owns the lion’s share, with an 89-acre vineyard planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Beckstoffer sell To-Kalon grapes to such acclaimed producers as Schrader, Paul Hobbs, Tor Kenward, Realm, Alpha Omega and the Morlet Family. Beckstoffer Vineyards, a vineyard management business, owns and farms more than 3,600 acres of highly prestigious grape growing acreage in Napa Valley, Mendocino County and the Red Hills of Lake County. A senior executive with Heublein in the 1960s, Andy Beckstoffer is credited with steering Napa Valley vintners towards improving farming and the quality of the grapes used for wine.

TYPE

Red Wine, Cabernet Sauvignon

One of the most widely grown grape varieties, it can be found in nearly every wine growing region. A cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a hardy vine that produces a full-bodied wine with high tannins and great aging potential.
