RATINGS

94James Suckling

Although the fruit here is very ripe, the special vitality and firm mineral structure of this appellation lies behind it, becoming ever more prominent as the wine flows steadily over the palate. Although the finish is quite firm, it remains both subtle and precise.

90-92Vinous / IWC

...very seductive on the nose with citrus fruit, damp undergrowth and just a touch of white asparagus...

PRODUCER

Domaine Chanson Pere et Fils

Chanson Pere et Fils was established in Beaune in 1750, making it one of the oldest domaines in Beaune. The original founder, Simon Verry, named the business after himself. A century later, the family sold their business to their young manager, Alexis Chanson. In 1999 the 100-acre estate was sold to Champagne Bollinger and Jean-Pierre Confuron was brought in as winemaker. Chanson Pere et Fils has Grand Cru and Premier Cru parcels, including the Beaune Premier Cru monopole Clos des Feves.

REGION

France, Burgundy, Côte d'Or, Côte de Beaune, Aloxe-Corton, Le Corton

Corton is a Grand Cru vineyard for red wine within the Corton appellation. It is a long, slender, stony limestone site that wraps part way around the top slopes of Montagne de Corton, a hill that reaches to 1,150 feet. The 234-acre vineyard primarily faces south, west and east, and is sheltered by a windbreak of trees while also receiving excellent exposure to sun. Corton is the Cote de Beaune’s only red Grand Cru. The largest producers are Louis Latour, with 37.5 acres; Hospices de Beaune, with 16 acres; and D'Ardhuy, with 11.85 acres. The names of smaller vineyards within Corton are frequently added to the names of Corton wines, resulting in names such as Corton Les Renardes, Corton Les Chaumes, Corton les Perrieres, etc.

TYPE

White Wine, Chardonnay, Grand Cru

This white variety originated in Burgundy, but is now grown around the world. Its flexibility to thrive in many regions translates to wide flavor profile in the market. Chardonnay is commonly used in making Champagne and sparkling wines.
