RATINGS

92The Wine Advocate

...aromas of red berries, cherries, rose petals, spices and orange rind. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, it's seamless and elegant, with melting tannins and a succulent core of fruit, concluding with a fragrant finish.

16Jancis Robinson

Very pure and ripe cherries at the core here. Quite a serious structure, building grip and savour but retaining ethereal cherry-blossom fruit in the middle.

PRODUCER

Domaine A.-F. Gros

The domaine was established in 1988 when the parents of Anne-Françoise, Jean and Jeanine Gros of Vosne-Romanée decided to let go of a few parcels of the family domaine. The Gros family has been making wine in Burgundy since the mid -1800s as one generation after another has taken over the family enterprise and also branched out into their own wine producing endeavors. Anne-Françoise also acquired a domaine in Flagey-Échezeaux. Later, with her husband François Parent, she purchased a vineyard in Savigny-les-Beaune. The domaine now includes vineyards in numerous appellations, including Vosne-Romanee, Chambolle Musigny, Pommard and Beaune. Francois and Anne-Francois say that in Burgundy every appellation has a personality. "Each wine is bursting with a color and substance of its own, and that is the sensation you have in the palate, unique and different for each appellation."

REGION

France, Beaujolais, Moulin-a-Vent

Moulin-à-Vent is a Beaujolais Cru appellation that takes its charming name from the only windmill, or moulin-à-vent, still in existence in Beaujolais. The picturesque windmill is several hundred years old and features prominently on the labels of some producers in the appellation. Moulin-à-Vent is located in the north central region of Beaujolais, and it includes 1,605 acres of vineyards. Many Beaujolais admirers consider it the “King” of the Beaujolais Crus, and Moulin-à-Vent wines are known for their richness, fullness and their ability to age. Like nearly all of Beaujolais, the grape grown here is Gamay. About 400,000 cases are produced annually.

TYPE

Red Wine, Gamay, Cru Beaujolais

The Gamay grape produces a light, versatile and food-friendly wine. It is best known for making Beaujolais Nouveau, but it is also grown in Loire and Tours. Thankfully the 14th C. Duke of Burgundy’s degree to ban the grape did not spread through all of France.
