RATINGS

98John Gilman

...utterly brilliant...soaring from the glass in a magical mélange of pear, apple, chalky minerality, a touch of citrus oil, incipient notes of crème patissière, vanillin oak and a beautiful topnote of lemon blossoms. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with vibrant acids, laser-like focus, stunning complexity and great length and grip on the utterly seamless finish.

95-97The Wine Advocate

The palate is crisp and tensile on the entry...very discrete white peach and nectarine notes...superb persistence in the mouth...

94Stephen Tanzer

Pungent aromas of lemon zest and crushed stone. Voluminous on the attack, then densely packed and energetic in the mid-palate, showing salty minerality, sexy restrained sweetness...savory finish mounting slowly and lingering well.

92-95Burghound.com

The mouth feel of the gorgeously intense and mineral-driven flavors is finer than that of the Bâtard though at the expense of a bit less power on the mouth coating and hugely long finish.

PRODUCER

Bernard Moreau

Bernard Moreau is a fourth-generation winemaker in Chassagne-Montrachet, in Burgundy’s Cote de Beaune. He is joined in the business by his sons Alexandre and Benoit. The domaine includes 35 acres in the communes of Chassagne-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin. The estate makes several dozen wines, of which about 60 % are white, and 40% red. There are red and white Premier Cru parcels in Chassagne-Montrachet. Of special notes is the Chassagne-Montrachet rouge Premier Cru monopole, La Cardeuse. Clive Coates notes that Bernard Moreau produces “very good wines.”

REGION

France, Burgundy, Côte d'Or, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet

Chevalier-Montrachet is one of the four justly famous Grand Cru Chardonnay vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet appellation in Burgundy. The 18-acre vineyard is located up the slope from Le Montrachet and shares Le Montrachet’s excellent southern exposure, though Chevalier-Montrachet’s soil is considerably thinner and more rocky. Burgundy writer Clive Coates has noted that Chevalier-Montrachet is “full, firm” and has “a great deal of depth and elegance.” The largest landholders are Bouchard Pere et Fils, 7.5 acres; Leflaive, 4 acres; and Louis Jadot, 1.5 acres.

TYPE

White Wine, Chardonnay, Grand Cru

This white variety originated in Burgundy, but is now grown around the world. Its flexibility to thrive in many regions translates to wide flavor profile in the market. Chardonnay is commonly used in making Champagne and sparkling wines.
