RATINGS

93James Suckling

Lovely perfumes and currants with graphite and light herbs. Medium to full body. Creamy tannins. Soft and elegant and creamy at the end. Finesse.

93+ Jeb Dunnuck

...loads of blackcurrant, black cherry, unsmoked tobacco, new leather, and spice-driven aromas, with just a hint of chocolatey oak. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and balanced, with beautiful elegance, it shows the classic style of the vintage...

92The Wine Advocate

...sings of baked blackberries, black cherry compote and warm cassis with hints of fungi and tilled soil. Medium-bodied, the palate is packed with black fruit flavors and loads of earthy accents, framed by firm, grainy tannins, finishing savory.

92Wine Spectator

...bitter plum, dark cherry and red currant fruit flavors are well-melded, carried by a racy iron streak through a finish gilded with floral and sanguine notes. Fresh and defined from start to finish.

92Vinous / IWC

Displaying quite irresistible raspberry and wild strawberry fruit on the nose...well-defined with touches of white pepper and cedar emerging with time...medium-bodied with a supple opening, hints of meat juices infusing the red fruit as it moves into its secondary phase...plenty of depth and vigor on the finish...

92Decanter Magazine (points)

Grilled caramel notes...alongside black chocolate and liquorice which are knitted together...slightly soft finish...

17Jancis Robinson

Blueberry and blackberry on the nose. Powerful, rich palate where fruit and structure come crashing together. Chewy, savoury and complex...a very impressive example that lingers with incense and blackcurrant together.

PRODUCER

Château Haut-Batailley

Château Haut-Batailley is a 54-acre estate in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. It is a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux classification. The estate was part of Château Batailley until 1942, when the owners, the brothers Francois and Marcel Borie, divided Château Batailley into two properties. The smaller part of estate became Haut-Batailley and it is still owned and operated by the Borie family, who also owns Ducru-Beaucaillou and Grand-Puy-Lacoste. The vineyards of Haut-Batailley are planted to 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. About 10,000 cases are produced annually. The second wine is Tour d’Aspic.

REGION

France, Bordeaux, Pauillac

Pauillac is Bordeaux’s most famous appellation, thanks to the fact that it is home to three of the region’s fabled first-growth châteaux, Lafite-Rothschild, Mouton-Rothschild and Latour. Perched on the left bank of the Gironde River north of the city of Bordeaux, Pauillac is centered around the commune of Pauillac and includes about 3,000 acres of vineyards. The Bordeaux classification of 1855 named 18 classified growths, including the three above mentioned First Growths. Cabernet Sauvignon is the principal grape grown, followed by Merlot. The soil is mostly sandy gravel mixed with marl and iron. Robert M. Parker Jr. has written that “the textbook Pauillac would tend to have a rich, full-bodied texture, a distinctive bouquet of black currants, licorice and cedary scents, and excellent aging potential.”
