RATINGS

96Decanter Magazine (points)

Lavish toasty oak spices mingle with toffee and brandied fruit aromas...silky palate reveals juicy blackberry and blueberry compote, balanced by emerging savoury notes of scorched earth and sun-dried herbs. The robust cedary tannins lead to a cinder toffee oak finish...the density of the fruit and ample freshness balance this delicious red.

95Wine Enthusiast

...earthy in sage, compost and pencil lead. Dusty with notes of graphite, it is soft and supple on the palate, preferring elegance over power and density. The feathery texture finishes in a subdued richness of cocoa nib.

94The Wine Advocate

...earthy nose of tilled soil, underbrush and mossy tree bark over a blackcurrant and black cherry core with a fragrant waft of lavender...fine-grained tannins and lively fruit...medium to full-bodied, finishing on a lingering mineral note.

94Vinous / IWC

...a racy, succulent wine. Sweet red cherry, red plum, kirsch, blood orange and spice give the Fortuna a very attractive upper register to play off its mid-weight feel and structure.

94Jeb Dunnuck

...jammy, smoky black and blue fruits as well as some violets, scorched earth, and smoky oak aromatics. These carry to a full-bodied, ripe, concentrated wine...

90James Suckling

Ripe and chewy with aromas of stewed blackberries, cooked cherries, bark and sweet tobacco. Some jam and grilled peppers, too. Full-bodied with firm, ripe tannins. A little warm on the finish.

PRODUCER

Turnbull

Turnbull Wine Cellars in Oakville was founded in 1979 by William Turnbull, a noted Bay Area architect, and Reverdy Johnson, a lawyer. The two had worked together on the creation of the famous Sea Ranch development on the coast north of San Francisco The winery was then called Johnson Turnbull. In 1993 it was bought by publisher Patrick O’Dell, who updated the winery and bought additional property, bringing the estate to 148 acres. Turnbull makes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Wine Advocate rated Turnbull’s 2010 Fortuna Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon at 100 pts and called it “perfection…A magnificent effort that should turn out to be one of the great modern classics of Napa Valley…”

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Oakville AVA is one of the two or three most prestigious appellations in the United States. Located in the heart of Napa Valley, its 5,000 vineyard acres produce some of the world’s most acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon, including such California “cult” Cabs as Screaming Eagle and Harlan Estate. Before those boutique producers rose to fame in the 1990s, Oakville was already renowned as home to Robert Mondavi, Opus One and Groth Vineyards, among others. Along with the famous wineries, there are premier vineyards in this AVA, including Martha’s Vineyard and To Kalon Vineyard. To Kalon was first planted in 1868 by H.W. Crabb, one of California’s first viticultural researchers, and he named the vineyard after the ancient Greek phrase for “most beautiful.” Though many grapes can be successfully grown in Oakville, Cabernet Sauvignon is king. Merlot and Chardonnay are also frequently planted. Oakville Cabs are prized for their richness, complexity and weight. Oakville was designated as an AVA in 1993.

TYPE

Red Wine, Cabernet Sauvignon

One of the most widely grown grape varieties, it can be found in nearly every wine growing region. A cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a hardy vine that produces a full-bodied wine with high tannins and great aging potential.
