RATINGS

97Jeb Dunnuck

Gorgeous blue fruits (cassis, blueberries), violets, leafy tobacco, and spring flower notes all emerge from this gorgeously balanced, pure, polished mountain Cabernet Sauvignon...picks up a distinct rocky minerality on the finish...purity, balance, and length are all just brilliantly done.

96James Suckling

Wonderful aromas of crushed stone, bark, blackberry and walnut with some meat. Goes to violets. Full-bodied and beautifully integrated with a dense yet agile palate and a long, lingering finish.

96Wine Enthusiast

Fragrant berry fruit, sage and dark chocolate mingle around a lengthy, firm yet supple wine of tremendous structure and power. Crushed rock, tobacco and toast contribute further characteristics of brooding intensity, the ripeness considerable and ageworthy.

95The Wine Advocate

...subtle mulberries and redcurrant jelly scents giving way to a profound core of blackcurrant pastilles, forest floor and truffles plus a hint of bouquet garni. Full-bodied with a rock-solid foundation of ripe, grainy tannins and a lively line of acidity supporting the packed-in flavors, it finishes with a dazzling array of mineral sparks.

93Wine Spectator

This marries lush, dark plum and blackberry fruit paste flavors with racy cast iron and roasted earth notes, producing a muscular yet driven and defined wine that leaves smoldering savory and steeped fruit notes on the finish.

93Vinous / IWC

...dark, brooding behemoth. Huge tannins enshrouded the blackberry jam, crème de cassis and chocolate flavors.

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley

Napa Valley AVA is the most famous winemaking region in the United States and one of the most prestigious in the world. With nearly 43,000 acres of vineyards and more than 300 wineries, it is the heart of fine wine production in the United States. Winemaking started in Napa in 1838 when George C. Yount planted grapes and began producing wine commercially. Other winemaking pioneers followed in the late 19th century, including the founders of Charles Krug, Schramsberg, Inglenook and Beaulieu Vineyards. An infestation of phylloxera, an insect that attacks vine roots, and the onset of Prohibition nearly wiped out the nascent Napa wine industry in the early 20th century. But by the late 1950s and early 1960s Robert Mondavi and other visionaries were producing quality wines easily distinguishable from the mass-produced jug wines made in California’s Central Valley. Napa Valley’s AVA was established in 1983, and today there are 16 sub-appellations within the Napa Valley AVA. Many grapes grow well in Napa’s Mediterranean climate, but the region is best known for Cabernet Sauvignon. Chardonnay is also very successfully cultivated, and about 30% of the AVA’s acreage is planted to white grapes, with the majority of those grapes being Chardonnay,
