RATINGS

98Wine Spectator

This intense red is saturated with macerated plum, black cherry, black currant, violet, iron and spice aromas and flavors, with a rich texture wrapping around the refined tannins. Distinctive and expressive, this remains fresh and focused through the long, complex aftertaste.

95Vinous / IWC

It opens up with a dark and alluring display of sweet herbs, tobacco and crushed black cherries, as hints of white smoke, sage and cedar add further depths. It’s velvety and pliant, cast over a core of motivating acidity and cooling minerals, creating a push and pull between ripeness and tension. Fine tannins lurk deep beneath it all...

94James Suckling

A rich, finely layered red with plum and citrus fruit, as well as hints of balsamic. Fine tannins. Medium body. Lovely fruit on the palate and fruit tea at the finish. All about finesse and complexity.

93The Wine Advocate

...offers a heavier and more oak-driven style with ripe cherry fruit, soft tannins, spice, smoke, tar and road paving...sweet plum, cherry and blackberry on the close. Those sweet fruit nuances are followed by spicy cedar and campfire ash.

93Wine Enthusiast

French oak, forest floor, new leather and camphor aromas take shape on this powerfully structured, concentrated red. Despite the muscular build, it also has a surprising finesse, delivering fleshy black plum, cherry marinated in spirits, vanilla and licorice framed in enveloping, velvety tannins.

93Jeb Dunnuck

...focused and concentrated aromatics of candied black cherry, black licorice, fresh tobacco, and forest floor. The palate is supple and ripe, with blackberry, balsamic, and cedar, and modest acidity.

REGION

Italy, Tuscany, Brunello di Montalcino

Brunello di Montalcino is regarded as one of Italy’s best appellations. Located in south central Tuscany below Chianti, the wines of Brunello di Montalcino DOCG are made of a Sangiovese clone called “brunello,” which means “little dark one,” a reference to the brown tones in the skin of the grape. Unlike some Tuscan appellations that allow other grapes to be blended with Sangiovese, Brunello di Montalcino is entirely Sangiovese. Montalcino itself is a picturesque, hill-top town not especially well known for wine production until the mid-19th century, when a local vineyard owner isolated the brunello clone and planted it. Other growers followed suit. Nevertheless it wasn’t until 1970s that wine enthusiasts started paying attention to Brunello di Montalcino, which by then was becoming an outstanding wine. Today there are 120 estates in the DOCG, up from about 25 estates in 1975. Brunellos in general are bigger, darker, more tannic and more powerful wines than Chiantis or most other Sangioveses. By law they must be aged for four years, and two of those years must be in wooden barrels.
