RATINGS

99The Wine Advocate

Full-bodied, super concentrated yet perfectly balanced with a rock-solid structure of firm, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, the palate reveals layer upon layer of black fruit and savory flavors, finishing with epic length and depth and imparting an overall satisfying sense that defies descriptors. Just magic.

93Vinous / IWC

Rich and sumptuous in the glass, the 2016 exudes tons of textural richness in all of its dimensions. The oak has now integrated well, which allows the dark, jammy fruit to be super-expressive.

92Wine Spectator

This is laden with dark fig, blackberry and açaí berry reduction flavors, while notes of tobacco, graphite and ganache fill in throughout. Delivers ripe, juicy energy on the finish.

PRODUCER

Purlieu Wines

Purlieu Wines' name is a nod to the estate’s Coombsville AVA location at the edge of the Napa Valley. The operations team is made up of two of the region’s rising stars, winemaker Julien Fayard and vineyard manager Steve Matthiasson. Purlieu sources grapes from the famous To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville, as well as the Martinez Vineyard in the Vaca Mountain foothills. Purlieu also leases a small vineyard in the Coombsville AVA. Purlieu makes Cabernet Sauvignon. Vinous has complimented the wines, noting that they are “made in Fayard’s signature style that seeks textural richness and intensity.”

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, Coombsville

Coombsville AVA is one of Napa Valley’s newer appellations, having received its official designation only in 2011. Tucked just to the northeast of Los Carneros and a few minutes’ drive east of downtown Napa, the Coombsville appellation is relatively large at a total of 11,000 acres. The elevation varies from 100 to 1,000 feet, and the climate is moderated by marine breezes from the San Pablo Bay. The main grape varieties here are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Syrah and Pinot Noir.

TYPE

Red Wine, Cabernet Sauvignon

One of the most widely grown grape varieties, it can be found in nearly every wine growing region. A cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a hardy vine that produces a full-bodied wine with high tannins and great aging potential.
