RATINGS

97The Wine Advocate

...dense and rich, thickly concentrated and full-bodied...lively through a fine dusting of savory spices—allspice, clove, star anise—and juicy, mouthwatering acids, which support the blackberry and plum fruit...finish, framed by softly dusty and supple tannins...

97James Suckling

...rich array of baking spices permeating ripe blackberries, red berries and plums. Chocolate, plum cake, currants, freshly turned and loamy earth and dried sage leaves, too...palate's smoothly arranged around the fine, long tannins that carry a concentrated core of blackberries, tarry, dark stony flavors, ripe blood plums and a long trail of deeply spicy warmth through the finish. Hints of mocha and expresso to close. Elegant, complex and complete.

97Wine Enthusiast

...nose croons to a medley of ripe red berries and plums followed by eucalyptus, black pepper, pencil lead on a core of damp earth and iodine...palate slinks with a satiny texture and primary fruit. Charred wood, leather and graphite are knit together with threads of fine, silky tannins...finish is long, tangy and a touch savory.

94Wine Spectator

Elegant and refined...showing a succulent side, featuring creamy notes of maraschino cherry, raspberry coulis and fresh pomegranate at the core. Accents of sage, tobacco and espresso come in on the finish. Expressive and generous, with polished, lithe tannins.

18Jancis Robinson

Salty. Inky. And so spicy! Savoury, umami, yet with sweetness. Salted dates and dried blueberries and then these waves of spice... Power and melody, like a cello playing over the war-like roll of kettle drums. Thyme and dried wild herbs packed into a powerfully concentrated wine...

REGION

Australia, South Australia

South Australia is the nation’s most important wine region. South Australia is to Australia what California is to the U.S. About half of Australia’s wine comes from South Australia and many of the country’s most acclaimed producers are there. Wineries based in South Australia include Penfolds Grange, Torbreck, Amon Ra, Henschke and Jacob’s Creek. The prestigious Barossa Valley is located in South Australia, and is often compared to Napa Valley because it is gorgeous topography covered in grape vines. First farmed by 19th century German-speakers who immigrated from what is now Poland, the Barossa Valley is the crown jewel of the region. South Australia has widely varying climates, from very hot, dry areas to cooler, high altitude areas. There are more than 150,000 acres of vineyards in South Australia, with more being planted each month. Shiraz is king, though the region also produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Mourvedre, Chardonnay and Semillon.

TYPE

Red Wine, Syrah (Shiraz)

This grape is grown in milder climates and produces a medium-to full-bodied wine. It is also known as Shiraz, but should not be confused with Petit Sirah, which was developed by crossing Syrah with Peloursin.
