RATINGS

98The Wine Advocate

...absolutely “wows” with intense creme de cassis and mocha aromas that are quite meaty and nutty plus accented by some earthy undertones, hints of baking spices, mint and touches of violets. Very concentrated and complex on the medium to full-bodied palate, the firm, fine-grained tannins and vibrant acid lend support to the very rich, long and layered finish.

98James Suckling

...very stylish rendition of rich, dark-berried Barossa shiraz with plenty of mocha and spices on the nose, as well as some tar, herbs and plums. Real depth and resonance. The palate is powerfully crafted and delivers an immense statement of concentrated Barossa shiraz fruit. Very long, ripe and deep with plums and blackberries. Sweet vanilla is dusted throughout, and the tannins are brash and juicy in depth. Impressive.

96Vinous / IWC

Heady floral, spicy aromas of black raspberry, cherry-cola and mocha, with notes of licorice and vanilla adding depth. Sappy, palate-coating dark fruit liqueur and floral pastille flavors show an alluring sweetness and seamless texture, gaining weight as well as energy and smokiness with air. Sweet and lively for its sheer mass, with a wallop of sweet oak and blue fruits dominating the wonderfully long, youthfully tannic finish.

94Wine Spectator

Elegant, expressive and harmonious, with juicy dark berry and plum fruit. The edges are shaded by hints of oatmeal and nutmeg, showing a hint of brown sugar on the long, expressive finish.

18.5Jancis Robinson

Black core. Very intense, very ripe, sweet spice. Floral lift too. Violets. Much more savoury on the palate, rich in dark chocolate and cedary too. Top-notch French oak offsets the ripe sweetness of the fruit. Very concentrated. And has a lovely dry tannic finish.

REGION

Australia, South Australia, Barossa Valley

South Australia is the nation’s most important wine region. South Australia is to Australia what California is to the U.S. About half of Australia’s wine comes from South Australia and many of the country’s most acclaimed producers are there. Wineries based in South Australia include Penfolds Grange, Torbreck, Amon Ra, Henschke and Jacob’s Creek. The prestigious Barossa Valley is located in South Australia, and is often compared to Napa Valley because it is gorgeous topography covered in grape vines. First farmed by 19th century German-speakers who immigrated from what is now Poland, the Barossa Valley is the crown jewel of the region. South Australia has widely varying climates, from very hot, dry areas to cooler, high altitude areas. There are more than 150,000 acres of vineyards in South Australia, with more being planted each month. Shiraz is king, though the region also produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Mourvedre, Chardonnay and Semillon.

TYPE

Red Wine, Syrah (Shiraz)

This grape is grown in milder climates and produces a medium-to full-bodied wine. It is also known as Shiraz, but should not be confused with Petit Sirah, which was developed by crossing Syrah with Peloursin.
