RATINGS

96+ The Wine Advocate

...stunning blackberries, black raspberries, kirsch and cassis scents with touches of cigar box and underbrush. The full-bodied palate is relatively restrained with loads of savory layers superbly framed by ripe, fine-grained tannins, finishing long and mineral tinged.

96Jeb Dunnuck

...a beauty that just sings of high-class Cabernet Franc with its forest floor, leafy herbs, iron, truffle, and sweet red and black fruits. With an incredible seamlessness, full body, awesome tannins, and a great finish...

95+ Vinous / IWC

Beams of tannin give the wine energy and thrust. Time in the glass brings out attractive floral and spice notes...impressive showing...

95Wine Enthusiast

...it brims in graphite, earth and dried herb, with classically stylized secondary layers of cassis, lavender, anise and oak. The texture is sublime. Lovely...

PRODUCER

Arietta

Arietta was founded in 1996 by wine specialist and auctioneer Fritz Hatton, his wife Caren and winemaker John Kongsgaard and his wife Maggie. Starting with a small block of vineyards on the Hudson Ranch in Napa/Carneros, Arietta has added other vineyards in the decades since then. The label features a few bars of the musical manuscript of Beethoven’s Arietta movement from his last piano sonata, which was Opus 111. Arietta’s founders are music lovers. Andy Erickson is the winemaker today and estate produces Bordeaux style blends, including a white wine.

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley

Napa Valley AVA is the most famous winemaking region in the United States and one of the most prestigious in the world. With nearly 43,000 acres of vineyards and more than 300 wineries, it is the heart of fine wine production in the United States. Winemaking started in Napa in 1838 when George C. Yount planted grapes and began producing wine commercially. Other winemaking pioneers followed in the late 19th century, including the founders of Charles Krug, Schramsberg, Inglenook and Beaulieu Vineyards. An infestation of phylloxera, an insect that attacks vine roots, and the onset of Prohibition nearly wiped out the nascent Napa wine industry in the early 20th century. But by the late 1950s and early 1960s Robert Mondavi and other visionaries were producing quality wines easily distinguishable from the mass-produced jug wines made in California’s Central Valley. Napa Valley’s AVA was established in 1983, and today there are 16 sub-appellations within the Napa Valley AVA. Many grapes grow well in Napa’s Mediterranean climate, but the region is best known for Cabernet Sauvignon. Chardonnay is also very successfully cultivated, and about 30% of the AVA’s acreage is planted to white grapes, with the majority of those grapes being Chardonnay,
