RATINGS

97+ The Wine Advocate

...complex bouquet of peonies, wild berries, rose petals, orange rind, exotic spices and sweet soil tones...full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with huge concentrated, beautifully ripe tannins and lively balancing acids. Powerful and resonant, this vintage stands out for its sheer plenitude and structural finesse...

96John Gilman

...beautiful wine, with beautiful aromatic and flavor complexity...well-integrated structural chassis... The bouquet wafts from the glass in a fine, black fruity blend of black plums, black cherries, cassis, roasted pigeon, a complex base of soil tones, espresso and cedary oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very precise...superb core of fruit, excellent backend mineral drive, ripe, buried tannins and lovely length and grip on the poised and well balanced finish.

94-96Vinous / IWC

...intense blackberry and bilberry fruit, superb mineralité...palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, crisp acidity and a persistent saline finish. Excellent.

18Jancis Robinson

Really snazzy and gorgeous with breadth, sweetness and a suggestion of dunked digestive biscuits. Beautifully polished tannins. And real energy as well as all that sweetness. The fruit almost subsumes all the fine tannin.

PRODUCER

Domaine Georges Mugneret (Mugneret-Gibourg)

Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg in Vosne-Romanee, in Burgundy’s Cote-de-Nuits, has a history that sounds like a fairy tale with a happy ending. Founded in 1933 by the young married couple Andre Mugneret and Jeanne Gibourg, they passed it on to their only son, Georges Mugneret, who gave up his career as an ophthalmologist to run the domaine. He became one of Burgundy’s most respected winemakers and ambassadors. When he died in 1988 his wife Jacqueline and their two daughters, Marie-Christine and Marie-Andree, took over the business. Today the daughters and their mother run the 22.5-acre estate with help from Marie-Christine’s daughter Lucie, who in 2018 joined the management team. Lucie has another sister and two first cousins, both women, so there is every possibility that the estate will someday be passed on to another generation of female vignerons. The domaine includes Grand Cru parcels in Ruchottes-Chambertin, Clos Vougeot and Echezeaux. There are also Premier Cru parcels in Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-St.-Georges. Clive Coates notes that “these wines are fullish, concentrated, very stylish and extremely well-balanced…This is a fine domaine.”

REGION

France, Burgundy, Côte d'Or, Côte de Nuits Villages, Vougeot, Clos de Vougeot

Clos de Vougeot is a walled vineyard that dominates the tiny commune of Vougeot in Burgundy’s Nuits-St.-Georges. The 124-acre Grand Cru vineyard includes a historic chateau that in 1945 was purchased by the Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, an organization devoted to promoting the traditions of Burgundy and its wines. The impressive chateau is the organization’s headquarters. Clos de Vougeot was established as a vineyard by Cistercian monks in the 12th century, then sold off to private owners after the French Revolution. The vineyard is unusual for a Grand Cru in that it includes land that runs down to the main road. The soil is light limestone with sand. Principal landowners are Chateau de la Tour, with 13 acres; Meo-Camuzet, 7.5 acres; Rebourseau, 5.5 acres; Louis Jadot, 5.3 acres; and Leroy, 5 acres.

TYPE

Red Wine, Pinot Noir, Grand Cru

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
