RATINGS

96-98The Wine Advocate

...has a very harmonious bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit with hints of crushed violet and freshly shucked oyster shell, later a touch of flint...extremely well defined and focused, conveying the sense of aristocracy one seeks from a Richebourg. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannin. There is real density and presence here and it is certainly more expressive than the Romanée-Saint-Vivant at the moment, with palpable tension on the finish.

93-96Stephen Tanzer

...conveying a medicinal cast to its aromas of dark berries, licorice pastille and violet. Boasts outstanding density and power but this penetrating wine shows a magically light touch and comes across as distinctly airy today.

17.5+ Jancis Robinson

Truly rich and sumptuous. Transparent with masses of well-judged ripe fruit. Very rewarding. A hint of coffee on the end. But overall this is fine wine. Long and rich.

PRODUCER

Alain Hudelot-Noellat

Domaine Alain Hudelot-Noellat is in Vougeot, Burgundy. The 30-acre estate was owned and operated by Alain Hudelot-Noellat for many decades. Today it is run by Alain's grandson Charles, who trained in oenology at Djjon University. Included are grand cru parcels in Clos de Vougeot, Romanee-St.-Vivant and Richebourg. Other plots are mostly premier cru. Robert M. Parker Jr. has noted that the estate produces “extremely seductive, creamy wines that have a vivid, well-focused, rich fruitiness, and good body.”

REGION

France, Burgundy, Côte d'Or, Côte de Nuits Villages, Vosne-Romanee, Richebourg

Richebourg is an 18.3-acre Grand Cru pinot noir vineyard in the Cote de Nuits, within the commune of Vosne-Romanee. The vineyard lies just to the north of La Romanee and Romanee-Conti and is situated at elevations from 260 to 280 meters. The soil is a clay, pebble, limestone and sand mixture. Richebourg includes the subsection of Les Veroilles-sous-Richebourg. Principal landholders of Richebourg are Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, with 8.78 acres; Leroy, with 1.95 acres; and Gros Frere et Soeur, with 1.73 acres.

TYPE

Red Wine, Pinot Noir, Grand Cru

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
