RATINGS

99Jeb Dunnuck

Straight-up awesome notes of black raspberries, blueberries, smoked tobacco, violets, spice box, and gravelly earth as well as a bloody, meaty character all emerge from this magical wine. With full-bodied richness, ultra-fine tannins, flawless balance, and a great, great finish...classical, elegant, style that still packs ample richness and depth.

98The Wine Advocate

...crème de cassis, baked plums, blueberry compote, chocolate box, earth and aniseed scents on the nose with wafts of cedar chest and pencil lead. Full-bodied, firm and grainy...concentrated, very classy and multilayered with great energy and a long finish.

96Vinous / IWC

Deep and ample on the palate...possesses off-the-charts richness and tons of character. A rush of black cherry, lavender, mint, pine, licorice and sweet spice builds effortlessly in the glass... All the elements are wonderfully fused together in this powerful, extravagantly ripe Cabernet Sauvignon...

96Wine Enthusiast

...tones of tar, tobacco and brooding black currant, with highlights of cedar, lavender and sage...powerfully built and concentrated...

92Wine Spectator

...fun, extroverted style, with creamed plum and boysenberry preserve flavors sailing along, lined with red licorice details and backed by sweet toast...brambly edges on the finish as the fruit drives through, delivering plenty of fruit.

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

Stags Leap District AVA in southern Napa Valley has a storied history. It is home to Stag’s Leap Cellars, whose 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon won the famous Judgment of Paris blind tasting that included several of Bordeaux’s most exalted First Growths. Vineyards were started in area in the late 19th century, but the district’s rise in prestige started in the late 1960s when Nathan Fay planted Cabernet Sauvignon. Fay later sold his estate to Warren Winiarski, founder of Stag’s Leap Cellars. The district was given its own AVA designation in 1989, and today there are 1,400 vineyard acres. The AVA is especially notable because it was the first in the U.S. to be granted AVA status based on terroir. Its distinctive soils is a mix of volcanic soils, river sediment and loamy clay-like soil. Because the soils don’t retain water well, vineyards in Stag’s Leap tend to grow fruit with great intensity and flavor. Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for 95% of the grapes planted in Stags Leap.

TYPE

Red Wine, Cabernet Sauvignon

One of the most widely grown grape varieties, it can be found in nearly every wine growing region. A cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a hardy vine that produces a full-bodied wine with high tannins and great aging potential.
