RATINGS

96James Suckling

This shows so much violet and dark-berry character on the nose. So enticing. Full-bodied with chewy and polished tannins, blackberries and eucalyptus and a light, menthol note to finish.

93+ Jeb Dunnuck

It offers additional richness and depth, with awesome notes of crème de cassis, spicy oak, licorice, and some chocolate all emerging from the glass. Medium to full-bodied and nicely textured, with ripe tannins...

92+ The Wine Advocate

...offers scents of wild blueberries, Black Forest cake and kirsch with touches of garrigue and tilled soil plus a waft of stewed tea. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and with a firm frame of grainy tannins, it has a lovely line of freshness taking the opulent fruit to a long finish.

92Vinous / IWC

Fresh floral notes add brightness to a core of sweet red cherry and red plum fruit. Silky, lifted and gracious, the 2016 has quite a bit to offer.

17.5Jancis Robinson

Intense but lively nose. Very ripe and luscious but with energy. Great stuff!

REGION

France, Bordeaux, St.-Émilion

Saint-Émilion is on the east side of the Dordogne River. At 13,400 acres it is one of Bordeaux’s largest appellations, and perhaps its most picturesque. It is also home to what has been called “the garagiste” movement of upstart, tradition-defying winemakers who produce artisanal wines in styles that are unconventional for the appellation. The village of Saint-Émilion dates from the middle ages and it sits on low hills, surrounded by ancient walls. Like its neighbor Pomerol, Saint-Émilion was not included in the famous Bordeaux classification system of 1855. But a century later a ranking system was put in place, and unlike the classification system for the Medoc, the Saint-Émilion system is reviewed every ten years, meaning that estates can be upgraded or downgraded. There are three rankings: Grand Cru Classé, Premier Grand Cru Classé B and Premier Grand Cru Classé A, with the final ranking being the best. Such legendary Saint-Émilion estates as Châteaux Ausone and Cheval-Blanc are Premier Grand Cru Classé A, along with Châteaux Pavie and Angélus, both added to the classification in 2012. Wines in this appellation are primarily Merlot, mixed with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

2016 Château Croix De Labrie

"One of St.-Emilion's most dazzling garage wines...production of this handcrafted garage wine is so small that the barrels in which it is aged are housed in the proprietor's living room." - Robert M. Parker, Jr.
