RATINGS

94The Wine Advocate

...nose of red and black currants, black plums and tapenade with touches of cigar box and dried Mediterranean herbs. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is laden with exotic spices and earthy layers, framed by firm, grainy tannins and finishing with great length.

94Jeb Dunnuck

...fresh, focused style to go with lots of blue fruits, graphite, cedar, and a hint of tobacco leaf...seamless, pure, nicely balanced, full-bodied style...

93Wine Spectator

Notable for the richness, depth, density and mocha-scented oak notes, with the oak giving the texture a smooth landing strip. The flavors are fresh and lively.

92Vinous / IWC

Dark cherry, plum mocha spice and licorice are nicely amped up in this pliant, supple Cabernet.

PRODUCER

Hourglass

Hourglass is a Napa Valley winery with vineyards in St. Helena and Calistoga. It is owned and operated by Jeff Smith and his wife Carolyn. The Hourglass debut release was in 1997. With additional investors they purchased more property in 2006 and built a state-of-the-art winery. Bob Foley was the winemaker from 1997 through 2010. In 2012 Tony Biagi took over as winemaker. Biagi also is winemaker for the company’s Blueline Vineyard in Calistoga. Biagi is also winemaker for The PlumpJack Group, owner of several wineries. Hourglass grows Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. The estate’s flagship wine is Cabernet Sauvignon. Robert M. Parker Jr. has written that the Hourglass wines are “frequently brilliant.” Hourglass makes a second label called HG III.

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley

Napa Valley AVA is the most famous winemaking region in the United States and one of the most prestigious in the world. With nearly 43,000 acres of vineyards and more than 300 wineries, it is the heart of fine wine production in the United States. Winemaking started in Napa in 1838 when George C. Yount planted grapes and began producing wine commercially. Other winemaking pioneers followed in the late 19th century, including the founders of Charles Krug, Schramsberg, Inglenook and Beaulieu Vineyards. An infestation of phylloxera, an insect that attacks vine roots, and the onset of Prohibition nearly wiped out the nascent Napa wine industry in the early 20th century. But by the late 1950s and early 1960s Robert Mondavi and other visionaries were producing quality wines easily distinguishable from the mass-produced jug wines made in California’s Central Valley. Napa Valley’s AVA was established in 1983, and today there are 16 sub-appellations within the Napa Valley AVA. Many grapes grow well in Napa’s Mediterranean climate, but the region is best known for Cabernet Sauvignon. Chardonnay is also very successfully cultivated, and about 30% of the AVA’s acreage is planted to white grapes, with the majority of those grapes being Chardonnay,
