RATINGS

92Vinous / IWC

Displays fragrant red and dark berry liqueur, incense and succulent floral scents, along with hints of candied flowers and woodsmoke... Sweet and penetrating, offers intense cherry and black raspberry flavors that deepen and spread out slowly on the back half. Rich yet surprisingly lively as well, with strong finishing thrust, strong persistence and smooth, even tannins lending framework and gentle grip.

92Jeb Dunnuck

...offers more baking spices as well as darker raspberry fruit, medium to full-bodied richness, good concentration...has some present tannin as well...terrific wine.

91The Wine Advocate

...nose of crushed raspberries, cranberries and forest floor with hints of potpourri and cinnamon stick. Medium-bodied with velvety tannins and lovely freshness, it has exuberant red berry flavors and a good long earth-laced finish.

PRODUCER

Talbott

Talbott Vineyards was created in 1982 when Robb Talbott planted his original vineyard in Carmel Valley. Robb is the son of the founders of Robert Talbott Inc., an apparel company that started out manufacturing luxury men’s ties, and he learned to enjoy fine wines while on silk buying trips in Europe with his parents. Today Talbott has two estate vineyards – the 565-acre Sleepy Hollow Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands and the original 14-acre Diamond T Vineyard -- and makes all of its wines from its own grapes. Dan Karlsen is winemaker. Talbott makes Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Wine Reviewers generally are highly complimentary.

REGION

United States, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

Santa Lucia Highlands AVA is a 12-mile long, narrow strip of an appellation wedged along the eastern hillsides of the Santa Lucia mountain range. Given its proximity to Big Sur and the Gabilan Mountain Range to the northeast, Santa Lucia a cool-climate wine growing district. Morning sun is often followed by maritime winds and fog in the afternoon, a weather pattern that prolongs the growing season and means long, gentle ripening of the grapes. Spanish missionaries planted vineyards in the district in the 18th century, but it wasn’t until the 1970s that modern winemakers planted vineyards and began making high quality wine. The district received AVA status in 1991 and today there are 6,000 vineyard acres in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Pinot Noir is the dominant grape planted, followed by Chardonnay and Riesling.

TYPE

Red Wine, Pinot Noir

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
