RATINGS

93James Suckling

This has a very assertive, ripe dark-fruit core with blackberries, cherries and dark plums, as well as chocolate on offer...tannins are ripe yet sturdy.

92Wine Spectator

Plush and polished, driven by a refined structure, offering elegant blackberry, espresso and spice flavors that take up speed on the long finish.

92Vinous / IWC

Perfumed aromas of cherry, redcurrant, rose petal and spices. Dry, suave and refined, showing modest power but lovely floral lift to its flavors of black- and redcurrant. This very laid-back, classy wine shows little in the way of easy sweetness but finishes with smooth tannins and sneaky length...

91Wine Enthusiast

Brooding aromas of dark fruit, char and spice are followed by velvety bittersweet chocolate, cherry and mocha flavors that linger on the persistent finish...

91Jeb Dunnuck

Ripe blueberries, cassis, toasted spice, and candied violet notes...it's medium to full-bodied, with a layered, seamless texture and a great finish. This is a classic, impeccably made...

PRODUCER

Northstar

Northstar Winery is in Walla Walla. Its debut wine was a 1994 Merlot. The estate was started by Chateau Ste. Michelle, the Northwest’s largest winemaker, to create Merlot-based premium wines in the style of right bank Bordeaux. Northstar specializes Merlot, though it also makes Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Malbec and a white blend of Semillon and Muscadelle. Grapes are sourced Columbia Valley in Eastern Washington. Northstar Premier, a 100% Merlot, is the estate’s flagship wine.

REGION

United States, Washington, Columbia Valley

Columbia Valley AVA is larger than some states. At 18,000 square miles, or 11 million acres, the appellation covers almost half of Washington State and a small part of Oregon on the south side of the Columbia River. Established in 1984, Columbia Valley contains numerous sub appellations within its boundaries, including Yakima Valley AVA and Walla Walla AVA, both large and important wine districts. Columbia Valley AVA, generally called the Columbia Basin by Pacific Northwesterners, is in the Columbia River Plateau, and the AVA also includes a section of northeastern Oregon. There are dozens of microclimates within this appellation of about 7,000 vineyard acres. Many kinds of grapes are grown in the Columbia Valley, though the principal grapes planted are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Riesling, Syrah, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc. Eastern Washington experiences very hot summers and cold winters, and the northern latitude means that Washington vineyards receive several more hours of sun in the summer than California vineyards. Grapes in Washington therefore have time to develop significant tannins and overall ripeness.

TYPE

Red Wine, Cabernet Sauvignon

One of the most widely grown grape varieties, it can be found in nearly every wine growing region. A cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a hardy vine that produces a full-bodied wine with high tannins and great aging potential.
