RATINGS

94-96Vinous / IWC

...classic Renardes in its power and muscle, yet all the elements fall into place gracefully. Smoke, iron, chalk and a host of mineral-infused notes support the finish. I find the balance of fruit and structure here absolutely compelling.

93Burghound.com

There is excellent mid-palate concentration to the broad-shouldered, intense and overtly powerful flavors that terminate in a robust, energetic and admirably complex finish that goes on and on.

90-92The Wine Advocate

It is very well-defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and a citric, verging on sorbet-like freshness...a more feminine style of Corton-Renards, though perhaps there is a touch of attenuation on the finish. Very fine.

90-92Stephen Tanzer

Wild aromas of red fruits, bacon, leather and fresh blood. Juicy...Very fresh and backward wine with an imploded rocky character.

PRODUCER

Thibault Liger-Belair

Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair is 20-acre estate in Nuits-Saint-Georges. It was created in 2003 by Thibault Liger-Belair, whose family has been in the wine business in Burgundy for several hundred years. Preceding generations ran domaines and negociant businesses. Today Thibault runs Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair and has a self-named negociant company. The domaine has parcels in eight appellations. There are Grand Crus in Clos de Vougeot and Richebourg, and Premier Crus in Vosne Romanee and Nuits-Saints-Georges. Thibault is the cousin of Louis-Michel of Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. Clive Coates notes that Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair “is a future star.”

REGION

France, Burgundy, Côte d'Or, Côte de Beaune, Aloxe-Corton, Le Corton

Corton is a Grand Cru vineyard for red wine within the Corton appellation. It is a long, slender, stony limestone site that wraps part way around the top slopes of Montagne de Corton, a hill that reaches to 1,150 feet. The 234-acre vineyard primarily faces south, west and east, and is sheltered by a windbreak of trees while also receiving excellent exposure to sun. Corton is the Cote de Beaune’s only red Grand Cru. The largest producers are Louis Latour, with 37.5 acres; Hospices de Beaune, with 16 acres; and D'Ardhuy, with 11.85 acres. The names of smaller vineyards within Corton are frequently added to the names of Corton wines, resulting in names such as Corton Les Renardes, Corton Les Chaumes, Corton les Perrieres, etc.

TYPE

Red Wine, Pinot Noir, Grand Cru

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
