Coming from a cool, marine influenced site in Santa Maria, the 2013 Grenache Bien Nacido is a surprisingly polished and elegant wine from Russell that has terrific notes of black raspberries, spice, licorice and dried flowers. Made from 100% Grenache that spent 24 months in 85% new French oak followed by nine months in bottle, it has a supple and seamless texture, nicely integrated acidity and a terrific finish. It's an impressive Grenache to drink over the coming 5-7 years.
Opaque ruby. A heady, powerfully scented bouquet evokes ripe red and dark berries, Indian spices and incense, and vanilla and floral pastille notes gain strength in the glass. Sweet, expansive black raspberry, cherry liqueur, rose pastille and fruitcake flavors are sharpened by a peppery element and a suggestion of smoky minerals. Shows surprising vivacity for its lushness and volume and finishes long, sweet and smooth, displaying just a hint of fine-grained tannins.
