RATINGS

100Vinous / IWC

...Lavender, spice, menthol, licorice, mocha and leather are all laced together as this riveting wine opens in the glass. The 2018 is going to need at least a few years to come together, but it is captivating, even in the early going. The Pure Magic is a five barrel blend from the B, D and F blocks, which includes the oldest 337 Clone Cabernet (BlockB) and Clone 6 Cabernet, of which there is very little left (Block D). (January 2021)

100Jeb Dunnuck

...Thrilling and incredibly pure notes of crème de cassis, spring flowers, damp earth, graphite, and violets all emerge from the glass, and it hits the palate with an ethereal, full-bodied, flawless texture that carries silky tannins and a monster of a finish. It's not the biggest or richest wine in the lineup, but its levels of finesse, balance, and purity are off the charts. This magical wine is perfection in a glass to this reviewer. It should evolve for 25+ years. (January 2021)

99The Wine Advocate

...prances out of the glass with flamboyant scents of black currant pastilles, red currant jelly, stewed plums and Morello cherries with suggestions of underbrush, charcoal, bouquet garni and lavender plus a touch of garrigue. Medium to full-bodied, the palate struts out a solid frame of exquisitely ripe tannins and bold freshness supporting the multilayered black and red berry flavors, finishing with epic length and an amazing display of mineral fireworks. 125 cases were made.

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, Oakville, To Kalon Vineyard

To- Kalon is one of the most famous vineyards in Napa Valley, often called the first “grand cru” California vineyard. It has always inspired those who live near it. Native Americans called the area around it tu-la-halusi – meaning “beautiful land.” And later residents called it To-Kalon, Greek for “the most beautiful.” Originally planted by Hamilton Crabb in 1968, it today is owned by Andy Beckstoffer, the Robert Mondavi Winery and Opus One. Beckstoffer owns the lion’s share, with an 89-acre vineyard planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Beckstoffer sell To-Kalon grapes to such acclaimed producers as Schrader, Paul Hobbs, Tor Kenward, Realm, Alpha Omega and the Morlet Family. Beckstoffer Vineyards, a vineyard management business, owns and farms more than 3,600 acres of highly prestigious grape growing acreage in Napa Valley, Mendocino County and the Red Hills of Lake County. A senior executive with Heublein in the 1960s, Andy Beckstoffer is credited with steering Napa Valley vintners towards improving farming and the quality of the grapes used for wine.
