RATINGS

94Vinous / IWC

Pungent aromas of ripe red and blue fruits, potpourri, pipe tobacco and spicecake, plus a hint of vanilla in the background. Silky and energetic on the palate, offering intense blackberry and cherry-vanilla flavors and licorice, mocha and candied rose accents. Concentrated yet lively in style, betraying no excess fat and showing sharp definition and smooth, polished tannins that lend subtle grip to the impressively long finish.

94Wine Enthusiast

...starting with an intense nose of black currant, espresso foam, caramel and crushed black rocks. The tannins are firm in structure yet soft and almost foamy to the touch, carrying dynamic flavors of char, coffee, fresh fruit and, on the finish, vanilla paste.

93The Wine Advocate

...offers intense scents of cassis, blackberry pie, mint chocolate, roast coffee bean, dried rose petals, cedar and sweet baking spices. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is expressive with spicy red and black fruits and a firm, grainy texture, finishing long, fresh and lifted.

93James Suckling

Subtle aromas of sliced peaches, strawberries, rose petals and slate follow through to a medium to full body with layers of fruit and underpinning acidity. It’s compact and beautiful.

92-94Jeb Dunnuck

This ripe, sexy, full-bodied barrel sample offers loads of cassis, graphite, toasted spice, and licorice aromas and flavors. It’s a rounded, elegant, pure Cabernet Sauvignon...

REGION

United States, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

Paso Robles AVA is midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, and it is considered one of the West Coast’s most exciting winemaking regions. With its hot, sometimes searingly dry and sunny weather, it is especially good country for growing warm climate grapes such as Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. Because many Paso Robles wineries have been successful with blending these grapes into Rhone Valley-style wines, it is known as the Rhone zone of California. The AVA was created in 1983 and there are 32,000 vineyard acres. In late 2014 the AVA was divided into 11 smaller sub-appellations, so starting with 2015 vintages labeling will become more specific on Paso Robles wines, which will now also list sub-appellations. Located in San Luis Obispo County, Paso Robles, the town and its surrounding area, was traditionally a farming and ranching region. But from a few dozen wineries in the early 1990s to more than 200 today, the area is quickly becoming known for wine and risk-taking winemakers.
