RATINGS

98James Suckling

Wow. This is so long and refined with rolling tannins that touch the extremes of the palate. So beautiful and classy. Full-bodied...

96Wine Enthusiast

Juicy on the palate and supple in tannin, this wine opens in a swirl of caramel apple, dark cherry and dust—flavors full of tension and powerful concentration. Herbal and spicy in equal measure, it delivers robust complexity and intense structure...

96Jeb Dunnuck

Rocking notes of crème de cassis, flowery incense, Asian spice, hints of chocolate, and violets all flow to a medium to full-bodied wine that has a beautiful texture, no hard edges, integrated acidity, and a great finish.

94Wine Spectator

Ripe, lively and focused, with an energizing savory streak amid the red and black currant and damson plum fruit flavors. A subtle tobacco note along the edge and a flash of minerality add range on the finish.

92The Wine Advocate

...notions of warm cassis, Black Forest cake, mulberries and stewed plums with suggestions of bay leaves, unsmoked cigars and black olives plus a touch of chargrill. Full-bodied, the palate is taut, muscular and firmly structured with a chewy texture and lovely backbone freshness, finishing with a compelling herbal lift.

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, Oakville, To Kalon Vineyard

To- Kalon is one of the most famous vineyards in Napa Valley, often called the first “grand cru” California vineyard. It has always inspired those who live near it. Native Americans called the area around it tu-la-halusi – meaning “beautiful land.” And later residents called it To-Kalon, Greek for “the most beautiful.” Originally planted by Hamilton Crabb in 1968, it today is owned by Andy Beckstoffer, the Robert Mondavi Winery and Opus One. Beckstoffer owns the lion’s share, with an 89-acre vineyard planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Beckstoffer sell To-Kalon grapes to such acclaimed producers as Schrader, Paul Hobbs, Tor Kenward, Realm, Alpha Omega and the Morlet Family. Beckstoffer Vineyards, a vineyard management business, owns and farms more than 3,600 acres of highly prestigious grape growing acreage in Napa Valley, Mendocino County and the Red Hills of Lake County. A senior executive with Heublein in the 1960s, Andy Beckstoffer is credited with steering Napa Valley vintners towards improving farming and the quality of the grapes used for wine.

TYPE

Red Wine, Cabernet Sauvignon

One of the most widely grown grape varieties, it can be found in nearly every wine growing region. A cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a hardy vine that produces a full-bodied wine with high tannins and great aging potential.
